The information here is... well, suspicious.
They proclaim the PS4 the "fastest-selling console", yet don't provide any figure for its sales. They say "The console broke pre-order records for Sony consoles and devices in Australia prior to its launch in the country on November 29"... note the "for Sony consoles and devices" - they didn't break pre-order records for gaming consoles, but for Sony consoles. They don't mind reporting current numbers for Europe+Australasia, yet don't actually provide a number for Australian sales.
In short, what should be a media report is instead a gushing advertisement.
I can't help but notice that this is all an "according to NPD". The thing is, NPD wasn't the company that tracked videogames in Australia - that's only a recent thing. Until recently, it was GfK. Which leads me to suspect that the entire article, and Sony's announcement, are based on NPD numbers that only go back something like 3 years.
This isn't to say that PS4 isn't the fastest selling console in Australia. It probably is. But without actual numbers relevant to the claim, I can't really take it all that seriously. Especially when I've seen no sign of PS4s being sold-out in Brisbane at any time since the end of 2013 (whereas I recall Wii being sold out frequently in 2007).
I'd be curious to hear what the VGChartz numbers on this currently look like. Anyone know?
