If you don't want a thread to get locked, just make it when ssj12 and MontanaHatchet aren't online.

Yeah, I remember Montana locked my virgin thread, then ioi unlocked it.

I only lock duplicate threads and blatant flamewar threads. Dunno what the other mods' policies are on locks.

I got my thread on Universal preparing titles for Blu-ray locked for no reason, and there was no flaming going on in the thread either... was annoying!

It seems some threads degenerate into personal attacks very quickly.. and the mods are probably just trying to improve the level of discourse here.

it doesn't matter where the reviews came from. it's still a legitimate topic that could use some discussion.

cause, there will be a day when a negative review is posted by someone and the same thread will come out again. if people are posting and having a heated discussion, there is no reason to lock a thread.

with threads locked at times for no obvious reason, it's hard to tell what's off limits and what's not.

I typically lock threads that contain flamewars, gets requested by OPer to lock, its a dup thread, or is completely stupid (example/ does sony pack one controller or two with the PS3)

I have no idea who or why the thread was locked.  And sure, it's a legitimate topic.  But misleading.  I would've rather the title be "GameFAQS user writes a bad review on SSBB".   8)

When the thread is pretty much pointless or when there is spamming/ flaming.

I can see why it was locked, some people thought it was stupid to bring up random people reviewing a game.

I thought it was interesting to discuss how someone could dis a game, based on all the best parts of it.
