As some of you have heard this generation of consoles most likely won't out do it's predeccssors, and i've heard some say this might be the last generation of dedicated gaming consoles.

I myself honestly think that the console industry is going to have to shrink or it will go under, in otherwords i think the industry is going to a have to go back to say a 5th generation or 6th generation sized market to stay profitable. This just my own idea, which i'm sure i'm not the first to have it but just thought i'd share it.

Thanks for sharing this idea 6 years late, and fyi, this idea has been proven 6 years wrong.

If you are trying to say mobile is going to overtake consoles.

I don't see myself gaming on my Iphone until Iphone like.... 10 by the speed they are upgrading the phones. For one thing, touchscreen gaming feels awkward and retarded.

If you are trying to say PC is going to overtake consoles.

You must have been living in a cave for the past 15 years plus.

Ok do tell how has this idea been proven wrong?

Both hardware and software sales hit new highs in different categories. Wii. DS. PSP. PS4. XBOX1. for hardware

Countless of single games have sold the most software in their respective franchises last gen. such as GTA, Halo, God of War, Mario Kart and more.

A lot more "million selling" games last gen than any other generation.

Not to mention money poured into game development for the industry as a whole is probably mutiples higher than any time in history for last gen and continues into this gen.  And yes, people do not pour money into game development unless they think they can make it back.

Pretty much what I am typing is common knowledge for a gamer isnt it? And yes, I have been hearing the consoles are doomed argument for a long time, this is why I am saying it's been proven wrong. To be honest, if PS4 haven't been selling this well, I would agree with you.

I think the industry will shrink. With that, a lot of publishers are going to drop out consodering the attachment rate of software will have to be very high in order to achieve success. The big publishers will stay but will continue to promote only their biggest most sucessful franchises on console. All while promoting their mid tier stuff on their distribution networks for maximum profit.

I find it strange how things that should be so obvious are misconstrued by others.

The gaming industry as a whole is growing to be bigger than ever before, that doesn't mean the console industry is shrinking. It just means that in addition to consoles there are now so many other places to play games.

I don't think there will be as many console sales this gen as there were last gen. But thats because 80M+ of the people that bought a certain console last gen are ok playing games on their cellphone this gen.

There are PC gamers, Console gamers, Handheld gamers and mobile gamers. The first two feeds are in the same market and the last two are in the same market. As long as the combined sales of consoles can surpass 100M each generation. Console gaming will be just fine and viable. Thats really all that matters.

You can tell me mobile games are replacing console games the day I can play games that play and look like TLoU, Farcry, the witcher, bloodborne, COD, GTA, FF15...etc. The only people that should really be afraid of the growth of mobile games are handheld gamers.

It will indeed shrink, but the only ones really hurting from it will be nintendo. We will see if the new generation of players will transition to consoles once they grow up or otherwise the entire industry will be in trouble. Shorter term however, everyone but nintendo really only has to be concerned about the rise in development costs versus the rate of new adopters. The current sales paint a very good picture of things to come and it is really at the beginning of next gen we can truly tell what the landscape has turned into. What is important to keep in mind is that we as a traditional medium can succeed with a far lower install base than what most think. It all depends on the devotion of the fanbase. Already next generation out performance last gen in software sales even though the install base is as low as 1/10th of the previous ones. It just goes to show how insignificant a huge portion of an install base is really passive when it comes to software purchases. If the industry could turn a bigger percentage of the install base into the heavy consumer, then we could rid ourselves from the need of consumer growth and maybe even afford to cut off quite the chunk of a reccomended install base.

Well i assume you were talking about the wii which is the console industry if im not mistaken. So it did shrink....

Honestly, I think that this site is very Nintendo centric. There is nothing wrong with that but the issue is that some view a shrink of Nintendo's share as the death of gaming. Everyone is completely ignoring that Sony and Microsoft are preforming ahead of last gen. And, when compared to aligned totals, the market is growing.

Nope. Shrinking for all.

You'd have to count handheld to show that. The console market is very healthy for Sony and somewhat for Microsoft. Nintendo is the one truly in trouble, as their consoles have never caught on and the handheld market is being taken over by mobile platforms.

as long as ther is animal crosing gamez with vilanger/me in it gamez industry will grow big!
