Over the years, far too much. For the most recent build... still far too much, but less so than if you reckon all the way back to the late 90s. My last upgrade chain ultimately ended up costing me around $1000, and included a new CPU, new RAM, new motherboard, new video card, new backup hard drive, new sound system (that at least was cost-free, as it was a gift), and just recently a new monitor to top it all off. The big upshot of all that is that I can use those last two in conjunction with my Wii and get plenty of console gaming goodness to go with my PC gaming goodness.

RAM was insanely expensive back then, costing $391. I recently added another 2 gig for $130 (identical to before) since all the prices have bottomed out.
I also have a 24" Dell monitor purchased seperately (though pretty much at the same time) for $1250, which came with a wireless keyboard/mouse and also a sennheiser headset. The equivilent monitor is now $800, though you can get one without the TV inputs for $600.

I jumped on the E6600 bandwagon as soon as it was available.
But damn, CPU and RAM prices are so much cheaper now.
2GB kits are like $70 now.
I'm not spending this much on my next build...
crappy old school NES games are more entertaining than next-gen games.
