The polls I've seen on here (for what they're worth) suggest that the number of people who only intend to get the 3DS version is very small compared with the number of people who are going to get the Wii U version or the number of people who are going to get both.

  If the polls are representative of everyone else outside this community, then SSB Wii U would beat MK8 hands down within a couple of weeks. Somehow, I'm not sure I can see that happening...

Yeah, but what I mean is, are our polls likely to be representative of the rest of the world? Will it shift consoles? Will we be seeing a jump in Wii U sales, or is everyone just going to be happy with the 3DS version?
