All three of them will still sell streaming devices and all three of them will lock their services down behind those devices. I don't see it happening any other way. |
Hardware is a mug's game. MS knows this, all their bread is buttered on the software side. As long as they can sell the software it's all good. It's only us who are hung up on a box with a name on it. Companies follow the money and if the money takes MS and Sony down the OEMs making the hardware and them selling software path, then that's where they'll go. Did MS get rich off making PCs or did it get rich off having Windows on 90%+ of all PCs?
You do know that within this generation Sony will have PS now available on android tablets and probably phones, and not just Xperia. Sony is already decoupling from its own hardware, they know where the world is headed and they are making sure they are on that train. While EA is full of shit saying iPhone 6 specs ar on par with current gen consoles, the fact of the matter is even mid-range phones will soon have enough grunt to become 1080p game streaming devices.
Nintendo is the only one that will jealously try to keep its game franchises on it's own custom hardware, but we are aeeing how much value there is in Nintendo IP right now, which for home consoles is not that much. Nintendo would make a better margin, albeit possibly less revenue, with making their games available on streaming services. Ultimately they would become more profitable, which isn;t too hard at the moment because despite their current revenue they are struggleing to turn a profit.
