Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft to announce Mojang (Minecraft) buyout on Monday, for $2.5b

Damn, that's a lot of money. Now I'm interested in seeing what they do with it.

It's definitely a win for Windows Phone.

tbh if it was coming to vita, it would have come to windows phone anyway. Even if it wasnt, 2.5bn still isnt worth it.

Sucks, probably in quite a few ways. Also, I'm pretty disappointed if money is the only thing behind this decision (on Mojang's part) but I don't really see any other possible reasons for this either.

It's easy to talk principals behind a keyboard. My guess is you'd dance too if someone put a $2.5 billion dollar cheque in front of your face.

Honestly you'd be an idiot not to.

Minecraft made $133 million last year, saying it would be a shoe-in to make billions is silly. It could easily collapse into a nothing franchise in 2-3 years. Angry Birds is already fading out.

The reason MS is paying this much is because they are going to turn into a mass marketed IP ... Minecraft 2.0? Sure. Minecraft Go-Kart Racing. Yup. Minecraft Fighters? Probably. Star Wars Minecraft? Yup. Disney Minecraft? Yup. Lord of the Rings Minecraft? Yup. Halo Minecraft? You bet your booty. Minecraft McDonalds Happy Meals? Minecraft The Movie 1/2/3? Go, go, go. Minecraft toys, t-shirts, etc.

If anything now Notch can make 100 different weird indie, edge hipster games now if he wants. If I was him I'd laugh all the way to the bank.

You're a fool if you think any of those ideas would make money XD

Seriously though, toys, t-shirts, and other physical merchandise I could see since they already exist and don't try to make Minecraft something it isn't, and maybe a movie, since Minecraft does have a story, but that other bullshit?! HA! Hilarious! But I have a feeling you're being sarcastic, so I'll let it go.

And yeah, Minecraft made $133 million, but a full new release of 2.0 could make billions over it's lifetime. That's where Microsoft will make it's money, if at all. Microsoft isn't so stupid as to try any of those other ideas you mentioned. Notch most certainly would NOT be an idiot to refuse Microsoft here. He has a lot more to gain from Minecraft than Microsoft does.

And no, Notch can't make 100 different weird indie games now. He can make precisely 0 of them, because he's just the owner of the company, except now he's not. Mojang will make precisely 0 indie games as well, because they're owned by a corporation and will be subject to corporate politics and corporate thinking, and that does not lead to indie games, it leads to safe bets, especially in today's gaming industry. Mojang will do one of three things now: 1) Make safe, AAA games that do nothing new, 2) Make Minecraft 2.0, except taking less risks and generally making the game less than it could have been, or 3) make shitty, soulless mobile games that exist to nickle and dime consumers to death. The likelihood of those things happening are 1) 0%, 2) 100%, and 3) 99%, barring Minecraft 2.0 being so unsuccessful that Microsoft gives up on Mojang (not likely). This is the fate of Mojang now, there is no escaping it.

This is completely against everything the Notch I knew said he was for. This isn't about Xbox, Sony, and Nintendo (it's more about mobile, as the article says), no, this is about the ultimate indie developer giving in to the ultimate sellout. I will NEVER touch Minecraft again, or anything from Mojang.

I can see why he did it, though. Let's say he only owned 10% of his own company (i think it's more). He just made $250 million.

I really don't think anyone would have turned down an offer of that size, especially given the revenue figures quoted earlier in this thread.

He has a 70% stake in the company.

So he stands to make 1.75 billion. For himself.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Come on, every man has a price, only few in history are an exception like Giordano Bruni, Gandhi, MLK Jr. And it sure didn't pay of for them in the short-run, but at least they are in history books.

$250 million, using lowball estimate by Mr. Khan is surely tough to pass by, secure a careless future for his 10 future generations, and still do whatever he enjoys most.

Hell, my price is considerably lower, not that anyone has a reason to pay me anything. But for just one million Euros I'd whore myself out to a night long gay S&M orgy without thinking twice.

No, you're right, this is just more proof that every man has his price. Mine would be higher though, and I'm disappointed that Notch's price wasn't higher. Also, if you think $250 million or even $2 billion of liquid cash would secure a future for generations...you're horribly misguided about business and economics.

What who does with it? Mojang? Mojang will do what Microsoft tells them to do, which will be to make the next Minecraft. Notch is the one that gets the $2.5 billion, and he won't be using it to make games, because he no longer owns a game company.

Funny, he tweeted about Windows 8 once that he'd release Minecraft on it only for 2 billion dollars. Apparently 1.75 billion is close enough. Fucking sellout.

Very happy about this deal.
The more they spend on that game, the less will be leftover to moneyhat those games that are of interest to me.

But now it leaves me wondering --- if they have so much money to waste on one old game, why not give Square Enix a few million more and make Tomb Raider fully exclusive exclusive? Surely they could have afforded $50 million?

You are confusing MS with the XBOX games division. MS now owns this as well as rights to make toys, movies, shirts, posters and everything else that comes with it. This should not affect the XBOX divisions profits/losses.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

so they paid 2.5 billion for a one hit wonder studio? Minecraft=Modern Tetris, no one will care in a few years and there is not much more than can do with it.
