Forums - Sony - Which way is the PS3 Trojan Horse Facing?

look at it this way the more who buy it, the cheaper production gets, so the cheaper they can sell it for, so thoughs who want a ps3 for games and dont have much money by the end of this year will proberly be able to afford one, i think they will be a lot cheaper by then, due to the amount they have sold

Rememer, everyone that buys ps3 for BR is then also a pontential buyer for ps3 games. It's a win win for Sony and not something they really have to worry about.

Look at the demographics and you'll see that the people who are buying the PS3 as a BR player aren't the least bit interested in buying games. Put another way - some folks buy cars to street race - they'll get Evos, or WRXes, or even Infiniti G35s and soup them up to earn some $$$ - however, most folks buy cars and will never, ever race them.

Just because a machine has the capacity to offer the buyers the ability to play video games doesn't mean they will jump over to that. It's a huge gamble for Sony in this regard. If the hardware keeps rising and the software sales stay stagnant, who's winning? Most console makers will admit they make money off the software sold. Even if Sony is selling consoles touted as the best and cheapiest BR player, they will just win one battle - being the go-to BR player. The game platform - shoot, Harrison said they'd sell 5 million consoles without games - was second tier from jump and to think that's gonna change - all I can say is wow. If folks are buying the PS3 without several AAA titles, and just touting is as the best BR player on the market, why should Sony change?

With the delayed launch, it was clear that Sony cared much, much more about BR than gaming (hence why they dropped BC and reduced the number of USB ports to just two ports). Maybe that will change, but with Sony at the helm of a format victory, they'll prove just how much they care about the consumer soon.

It's definelty not that cryptic.  The PS2 was the only last gen system to have a DVD player in it (I know the XBOX had one, but not really), anad were PS2 software sales low?  No.  Blu-Rayi s only the icing on the cake.  This is just a case of people wanting to look for every black lining in a silver cloud, because it is impossible to say the words "Sony", and "good" in the same sentence.

Now everyone will say "oh, it's only selling because it's a Blu-Ray player!".

It seems like Sony is damned if they do, and damned if they don't.  No matter what they do, it'll be looked at wrong.  If Blu-Ray lost, it would have been "Sony wasted all the money and time on Blu-Ray, and now the PS3 is worthless".

Also, I think that you're reading far too much into the lack of b/c in the forty gig.  That doesn't mean they're not marketing it as a game console, They took out b/c to drop the price, and the eighty gig still has b/c.  You are cherry picking.  You act like the eighty gig doesn't even exist.

And sony didn't delay their launch.  I think we can all see that Microsoft launced a year early.  I mean, has there ever been a console that has had only four years between launches?  I mean, if Microsoft didn't launch a year early, care to explain RRoD to me?  That's something that would have been done during testing of the console, and MS obviously didn't do that.  At least not enough.

And software isn't stagnant... PS3 DMC4 is selling on Par with 360 DMC4.  How does that happen with a userbase 6.86 million lower?  I'd think that software is just fine.

I´d say that, considering all the tech inside the PS3,it was released early, not late...

Nice reply DMeisterJ :D

the key word here is potential, meaning

 po·ten·tial

1.possible, as opposed to actual: the potential uses of nuclear energy.

2.capable of being or becoming: a potential danger to safety.

thank you come again

Thank you. As I was reading through the thread, I was hoping someone would bring some fact based logic to the table. I really didn't want to be the one to spell it all out.

This post wins IMO.

̶3̶R̶D̶   2ND! Place has never been so sweet.

Also Blueray being in the machine will also be able to transfer to the games themselves it's not like the Hd add on to the 360 that could only play the movies the blue ray drive can play blue ray games. The car comparison is week. The money people put into cars is far more than what people spend on a few games. Once the gaming machine is in the house it can allow for the buying of games. You say look at the demographics but do you show them? Is there a survey of people who bought ps3 for movies only? If so I'd like to see it. Once there is a game console in the house it makes the owner much more likely to buy a game. Not necessarily many but when they see one that appeals to them they would be more likely to get it since they already have the system and it would give them more reason to justify buying it in the first place.

Actually what you are assuming is wrong,,,,I often check AVS forums and there are lots of grown up men who have started playing games after they bought the PS3 for movie purposes only.So it is TRUE to say that there might be Potenial game buyers amon Bluray player buyers.lots of good games are comming this year to PS3 so we ahve to wait and see how many games will be sold as the PS3 sells more.

If you think that sony has forgotten about gaming comunity, you have to take another look at their exclusive  line up of games for this year.with the HD DVD out of the equation ,they can focus more on gaming now.

Sony have already gotten rid of PS2 compatibility, and now that they have won the format war, I think they will get rid of PS1 and PS3 compatibility and just sell their black behemoth as an over-sized Blu-Ray player.

PS3 fanboys think that just because SCE has dominated the videogame industry for the past decade and has more internal development studios than Nintendo and Microsoft combined that they will continue to support game development. Idiots. Expect Killzone 2 to be announced as a 360 exclusive and GT5 to be reduced to 480p and packaged with a wii-wheel.

It's true what madskillz says. The people who are buying the PS3 are only interested in movies. Sure, attach rates for multi-platform games are typically higher on the PS3, but that is just a statistical anomaly. Now that Blu-Ray has won, PS3 owners will start returning their games to exchange them for movies on the one hi-def format to rule them all.

Sony's gaming days are over. Just like they were this time last year.
