Forums - Gaming - Not a Single Xbox One Game Makes Top Twenty in Major Japanese Retailer’s Charts

Like every week, the major Japanese retailer Tautaya published its charts to give us a glimpse on what games achieved the best sales in Japan last week. This time around the chart is quite relevent, as it represents the first week of sales of Xbox One games in the archipelago of the rising sun.

Unfortunately, the results don’t seem too positive for Microsoft’s newly launched console.

  1. Dragon Quest X – 3DS
  2. Youkai Watch 2: Honke – 3DS
  3. Toukiden: Kiwami – PS Vita
  4. Youkai Watch 2: Ganso – 3DS
  5. Samurai Warriors 4 – PS4
  6. Persona 4 Arena: The Ultimax - PS3
  7. Toukiden: Kiwami – PSP
  8. Persona 4 Arena: The Ultimax – Limited Edition – PS3
  9. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – PS3
  10. Mario Kart 8 – Wii U
  11. Super Robot Wars OG Saga Masou Kishin F – PS3
  12. Yoshi’s New Island – 3DS
  13. The Last of Us Remastered – PS4
  14. Youkai Watch – 3DS
  15. Castlevania: Lords of Shadows 2 – PS3
  16. Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition – PS4
  17. The Amazing Spiderman 2 – PS4
  18. Ultra Dimension Action Neptunia U – PS Vita
  19. Medabots 8: Kabuto – 3DS
  20. Medabots 8: Kuwagata – 3DS

As you can see, there’s absolutely no Xbox One game that made it into the top 20, which is fairly surprising. Luckily Xbox One titles have their own separate chart, so we can at least see which ones did best:

  1. Dead Rising 3
  2. Forza Motorsport  5 – Limited Edition
  3. Ryse: Son of Rome
  4. Battlefield 4
  5. Forza Motorsport  5
  6. Call of Duty: Ghosts
  7. Watch_Dogs
  8. Musou Orochi 2: Ultimate
  9. Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare
  10. Wolfenstein: The New Order
  11. Zoo Tycoon
  12. Thief
  13. Tomb Rider
  14. Titanfall
  15. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
  16. Kinect Sports Rivals
  17. Need for Speed: Rivals
  18. Zumba Fitness: World party

It’s not too surprising to see Dead Rising 3 at the top, as the series has always been very popular in Japan. Forza Motorsport 5 in second place (which could very well be first summing up limited and standard edition, but unfortunately we have no way to know) is not shocking as well, considering that Japanese gamers are major petrolheads.

Titanfall seems to be a lot lower in its ranking that one could have expected, given its focus on giant mecha, but it was released several months ago on Xbox 360 and PC, and that most probably cut rather radically into the Xbox One version. Another reason for Titanfall’s low position (same as Kinect Sports Rivals) is that they were bundled with the Xbox One Day One edition with Kinect, and Tsutaya only sells games, not consoles. This also means that there’s a possibility that they’ll appear in the Media Create Charts on Wednesday, which also count bundled copies.

While Tsutaya’s charts aren’t relevant for all of Japan, but only for the retailer itself, they’re normally a good indication of what has gone down during the past week in the country.

That said, It’s also worth mentioning that Tsutaya isn’t normally considered a primary shopping place for the most hardcore gamers, and this may have offset the results in Xbox One’s disfavor. In fact the Xbox brand is more popular in Japan among the core of the core and less among casuals and families.

We’ll have to wait for the Media Create charts on Wednesday to see a more precise scenario and actual numbers, but so far it seems that Xbox One’s battle in the archipelago of the Rising Run will be an uphill one.

The PS5 Exists.

Not surprising.

A sad sight, but let's wait till mediacreate and the others for the exact numbers.

Normally this would seem like an issue - but as stated, this retailer ONLY sells games. Who goes to a store, buys a console, and then goes somewhere else the same day to buy a game? On a launch week, nearly all game sales are with the console.

It seems to me Xbox and 360 had games in the top when they released....

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

Well, as they say, there is one or two games bundled with the console.
I remember the major complaint about PS4 launch was that very few people purchased additional games, they just settled for Knack.
This is probably the same scenario, we just need to wait a couple of days for MC numbers.

Could have swore we had this thread already.

Given the sales of the PS4 and that neither has that hit game for the Japanese market this is about expected.

The Xbox 360 made some valiant efforts in the Japanese markets with little results but this time it may not be worth it.

This is the Game of Thrones

Where you either win

or you DIE

Bye bye Microsoft!

Bet with Xander XT:

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531
