Forums - Sales - My Theory on the XBOX 360 "shortages"...

So Squirrel, you think it's possible there is a new SKU on it's way because there are so many Halo3-editions out there (and MS wants to "force" these upon consumers and therefore supply constrained the regular Pros)?

If so, what kind of SKU do you think it would be?

Personally, I would expect a cheaper to manufacture model (possibly a 45nm model with large portions of the active cooling components removed) with the only "improvement" being a larger hard-drive.

45nm makes sense, I read in several sites that both MS and Sony are planning to adopt 45nm process chips in months.

The shortages are real, folks. We just don't know how significant they are or how much they are constraining sales.

There is, without a doubt, a shortage. It's been confirmed by people in the retail industry across the country. When a retailer orders a set of 360s and gets little or none of their order filled, that's not just a bullshit story from MS. That's a real shortage.

OT: Dmeister, that's a real possibility. If MS had plans for an HD-DVD model, it definitely would have screwed their production for awhile when it came to a grinding halt. Not sure if that's the reason or not but it is a possibility.

This theory makes sense.

No you're wrong.

There certainly never was an ultimate with HDDVD, that was one of the stupidest rumors I've ever heard and never had one single shred of credible evidence to back it up (prove me wrong).

I personally thought MS was doing something with their sku (just no HDDVD, ever) but now the old skus are back in stock so that wasn't the case. The most likely explanation is they just somehow ran out of stock temporarily. I've seen everything from too many replacement units being siphoned off for RROD, to losing Wistron as a supplier. to the chinese new year holiday blamed (chinese factories shut down) .

I think that the shortages are very real. Check the 360 Premium and Elite pages on BestBuy.com. Both say that store pick-up is unavailable, yet it IS available for the Arcade 360, and virtually every other item that Best Buy sells.

Take a look for yourselves:

Premium 360

Elite 360

Edit: As for the 10 closest GameStops in my area (ZIP Code 70001), 8 out of the 10 have Elites, but only 1 out of the 10 has Premiums.

I think its a plausible theory ....

I'm late to the thread, so I haven't read any of the follow up posts. But no, There wasn't going to be a HD-DVD 360. No one would develop games for it (not even Microsoft themselves) since over 18 million Xbox 360 users wouldn't be able to play them, and it would cost a lot more.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

^ No, not for HD-DVD games, a HD-DVD drive that plays movies and plays regular XBOX 360 games.

The HD DVD drive wouldn't be used for games.  It would basically have been a 360 + HD DVD add-on...but without the add-on.

Exactly. It would cost a lot more and not add anything to the gaming experience. Seems like a big waste of money to me.
