Forums - Gaming - Was WoW's "tribute" to Robin Williams a money grab?

I know there were petitions going around for Nintendo to do a tribute. Nintendo responded with a mature and responsible answer that basically said it was too soon but they will likely in the future. It was tasteful. http://www.polygon.com/2014/8/16/6013071/nintendo-responds-to-petition-to-include-robin-williams-tribute-in

I heard people say there was a petition for WoW but I never saw one and as far as I knew he never worked with WoW or the WoW commmunity like he did with Nintendo.  Personally I thought the move to do it so quickly was a bit sketchy and now we hear that WoW is going to be increasing the price on their previously dwindling user base. http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/11546524896 So am i the only one that thinks this is all sketchy and comes off as a money grab that exploits his death?

Well, is the tribute behind a pay wall?

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

He was an avid player of WoW. The dev team is just paying homage. How you manage to associate this with the sub increasing by like 1 buck on UK alone (this considering WoW is a 10 year old game that pretty much never readjusted its sub cost) is beyond me.

Also theyre "dwindling" userbase is still 6.8 million strong and most the users who left are from Asia (they were never realy atatched to beggin with, the sub model was totaly diferent over there and whatnot) and because its the end of expansion lull, most of the players leaving now come back once the new xpac hits.

It wont be, Blizz has a long track record of paying homages in the game trough NPC names, they havent said what its gona be yet, they just said he is going to be the funiest NPC ever implemented on the game.

Yes. a paywall that conicidently just went up right after they announced they were making an NPC for him.

The subscription cost dont freaking count are you nuts, thats the price for playing WoW, all of it, not a price for seeing Robbin Willians in game. And you might be a fan of the guy but arent you overestimating his capacity of making ppl want to buy and subscribe for a game via his existance as a not yet implemented NPC just a tiny bit ?

That's the petition. It was signed over 10k times until it was closed. It was directed at Activision Blizzard and they responded.
Robin Williams was very outspoken about his time playing WoW. It's a nice fit and an easy task to honor a great man. To assume that it's just a cashgrab is too cynical even for me.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
