Forums - Gaming - Square Enix's ability to screw its self over never ceases to amaze me.

Rise of Tomb Raider will be profitable for Square-Enix, so I don't get why everyone thinks it won't. They already got a huge cash deposit from M$ and it will sell over a million. Developing takes less time for 1 system as well as optimizing for the system, and usually allows for a smaller dev team.

Will there be a smaller profit due to exclusivity? maybe, but being it's only timed I highly doubt it will be all that much of a loss.

SE will either close its doors or be bought before 2017-2018. They have no future and have been diving more than almost every other publisher.
That's what happens when you make decisions like spending the budget of all Uncharted games put together just marketing one game that doesn't even sell as much as Uncharted, try to take control of talented studios work and ruin their games (Thief), try to make AAAs out of C-tier (Murdered), prolong FF13 and turn FF15 into something worse than TLG, etc etc.

Unfortunately this wil never happen. They happen to be the biggest 3rd party publisher in japan. That generally means that for that region publishing rights for a lot of western games are sub contracted to them. Eg the published CoD series in that region for activision. They can basically just live off publishing other publishers content in Japan and be ok... for for the most part is what they have been doing.

Wow, the TR butt hurt will not stop.

With that said, most of what the OP states is true. Based on the ideas that the OP brings out, they probably need the M$ money more to even get to the finish line on some of these other games.

It is near the end of the end....

This isn't about rise of the tomb raider being profitable for them. We are all in agreement that it will still be profitable. If nothing else with the money and marketing they are getting from MS it would mean that they don't have to spend anything developing the game. In a manner of speaking, MS is also pay ing for the development of the game for the PS4/PC lol.

This thread is about the company SE in general and the mind boggling number of bad decisions they make. Its a small miracle they are still afloat. A lot of comapanies closed up shop for being way less stupid than SE.

They say a 7M selling franchise didn't meet expectations? Of course it wouldnt when you consider that it had to make up for almost 3-4yrs of consistend money bleeding from every other development studio under them. Both deux ex and hitman absolution are each 3M+ sellers but only for a company like SE will those be considered failures cause their bottom line is so far into the red that nothing good the accomplish makes a difference.

You are totally right. They were my favourite game company, but these past years... Oh the horror.

"Hey, I just shot myself in the foot ! Funny right ? Here, I'll do it again, watch !"

Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you are necessarily right.

It takes a few slaps to the face for SE to learn from their mistakes. Just like it did last gen for them. Once Tomb Raider bombs they'll come around again.

1. They announced the FFXIII saga in 06 with FFXIII, FF Agito XIII (Now Type-0) and FFvXIII (Now FFXV). So of course when they announced XIII-3 we already knew about FFvXIII although we hadnt seen it in awhile and FFXIV is the MMO which dosent actually interfere with the main games all that much... and was technically already released.

2. Firstly they didnt announce FFvXIII too early, they just didnt expect to run into development issues with the hardware. Secondly they admitted to announcing KH3 early back in 2013 and apoligised saying not expect to see more of it for awhile.

3. Yes XIII-3 was a mistake but they wanted to wrap up the story (and have a game to fill the gap until XV). XIII-2 however is perfectly acceptable though. XIII is the 4th best selling game in the franchise with over 7m sales, why wouldnt you make a sequel. And you cant say it killed the FF franchise until we see how well XV sells.

4. As for TR I believe about a million people have explained this already but while I too hate the decision myself here is why its not a terrible idea. TR is releasing alongside UC4 in holiday 2015, so it was going to be crushed on PS4 anyway. Now when it launches on PS4 it dosent have to compete with UC4 as much. It will also sell quite well on XBO as MS will push its advertising quite hard to try and compete with UC4 in the holidays. Not only will the TR fans buy it but so will any Xbox fanboys who buy games to support the company, and maybe those fanboys end up TR fans who will buy future sequels. The last plus side is the obvious one, $$$. Tomb Raider wouldnt have come cheap. Side note, if MS are doing the advertising for it in 2015 then SQEX can still advertise its PS4 and PC release so it wont just release and people wont notice it.

Lol, we agree on that issue too. I wish they'd make one more bad decision though and announce The Crystal Bearers 2. That series has SO much potential. If they kept the open world, added a physical weapon, and put in 4 player online like Echoes Of TIme it could be a HUGE game.

Hahaha! Beautiful post. Like I couldn't have said it all better myself! That actually made me lol.

On the issue, yes... SE has to be one of the most stupid companies on the planet. So much so that one has to attribute every good thing they do to being a fluke. Just a few more points to tell you how stupid they really are since you don't follow them and I do.

  • They stalled development of FFv13 so they could make two more sequels to the most hated FF iteration ever.
  • The released the same FF game twice FF14 cause their first time round left them with a game that had too many issues.
  • They stalled development of a mainline sequel to one of their most losved franchises, Kingdom Hearts and made over 5-6 iterations of the game on a platform that had nothing to do with the platform that made the franchise a thing to begin with n addition to a couple of remasters. then as you said,
  • announced KH3 at the same time when announcing FF15 which is to be developed by the same team that is currently making FF15. So if FF15 comes out in 2016, which seems to be the case unless they surprise us all at TGS this year which could make it have a 2015 release date instead then that means that the earliest KH3 gets released is in 2017/2018!!!!!!
  • They let great extremly loved and well designed franchises die  (warning, get ready to be shocked!).
    • Parasite Eve
    • Brave fencer Musashi
    • Vagrant story
    • Final Fantasy Tactics
    • Front Mission
    • Dragon Quest
    • Valkyrie Profile
    • Star Ocean
    • Chrono Trigger
  • Any one of the above named franchises could have been rebooted and would have generated a lot of fanfare, especially Vagrant story(could have been better than the souls franchise), Parasite Eve, Dragon quest and star ocean(could have been their own answer to mass effect). But they somehow just pissed those all away.
  • Now from their recent aquisitions they have Hitman, tomb raider and duex ex... and somehow they have not announced or shown a new deux ex or hitman.
  • They went into bed with MS with the 360 in japan at the start of last gen, it failed. But at least one could understand why, the PS3 was a year late to market. But now they are doing it again, while completely ignoring the odds MS are facing right now.
so yeah, with SE... expect the stupid. The only good thing is that when they do get their ducks in a row, they make some really great stuff. Its the obligatory 10 other pieces of shit or bad decisions in between that is the problem.

And done, cross out all the lies for you in the dot points.

Well, he's kinda right about the franchises they let die...

But yeah, the rest of his points... meh.
