Forums - Sales - Why is the PSP Dead?

madkiller said:

Well, considering the PSP is last in hardware this week in both the U.S. and Others so far, and the software numbers are just horrile (18k in U.S.),

With Japan it will be above the 360.  Also the US software sales were about 219k last week. 18k is what Others is at this week, and keep in mind that is only tracking 6 titles.

You don't have to win to make money. The PSP is selling just fine. It's games are not, however.

@madkiller

Nintendo has been doing it that way since the N64 days - making it mainly on 1st party games. And the PSN avenue opens things up for smaller game companies to put out inexpensinve projects - this could help make the %pirated less - which can only help.

if 3rd partys dont want to make games for the PSP, well thats thier perogative but a good PSP game, priced correctly, will make money.

dgm6780 did you just call patapon a huge game? O.o; It is like locoroco only with less appeal. Do not expect good sales from it.

Also I would slightly agree with this. While the psp itself is selling well, that really means nothing. It's common for companies to make a loss on hardware. So are Sony making a profit or loss on Psp hardware sold?

As a gaming system the psp has failed pretty awfully. As a media device it did pretty bad. I say that as although the hardware sold well, the umd format failed. So there can't have been huge profit there. Software sales are horrendously bad, in Japan the wii software has already outsold psp software.

In america this week the psp came an extremely distant last place in software sales. Selling half the amount as the PS3.

The real problem though is you have basically stopped hearing about new games coming out on it. After FF7 and GoW what is there? Patapon which well be a niche title. And then? You just don't hear much about upcoming games for it.

Just because it isn't selling as well as the DS doesn't mean it's a failure. It's movie format dying, horrendous software sales however do. If sony make a loss on the hardware then I would be surprised if they even managed to recoup all the R+D costs + loss from hardware sold yet.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

Maybe now that the new slim PSP can't be made to run game copies without an old PSP, they'll start selling some games.

@ GGE

Right. Like that brand new battle system that we had in TP. Or the brand new star collecting system of SMG.

Oh ya. Cherry Pick.

Or like how Nintendo doesn't use the exact same engine to make each sequel over and over. Or like how SMG took a new perspective on the daunting concept of 3D platforming revolutionizing platformers as we know it?  TP took story telling to new levels never before seen in Zelda games as well as incorporated a transformation system which allowed you to switch back n' forth from Link to Wolf. While TP is hardly the greatest or innovative departure from the franchise it still manages to hold its own as a new and fresh addition.

Speaking of Cherry Picking maybe you could be a little more creative with your examples. Though I'm sure your fifteen minutes with SMG at the local Gamestop more than makes you an expert on it.

People please ignore GGE as she is not a representation of actual Nintendo fans but a blind fangirl.

Oh and you are a representation of the Nintendo fans?

Hey I have an idea, let's attack the individual instead of actually challenging or countering any of the points they've brought up in discussion. That's how big people debate right?

So who wants to take bets on how long before HAlil gets banned from the forums?

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

wow what a crap thread. 30 million+ and still selling 100k or more per week. it sure is dead. For Sony's first handheld to do this well is great. and they'll know what to do different on the PSP2.

I'm back...
