Forums - Sony - How does Sony track sales?

Shipping numbers are the only official numbers until they reveal any mile stones.

They have ways to track and estimate sales based on the shipping.

Last quarter they ended with about 10+mi (this is my asssumption since PS3 and PS4 number ar bundled, if its more than PS3 sales have fell heavely).

They probally have always 1mi units in the retail channel at any time.

Genuine question.

Having shipped numbers is easy but how do they obtain info about the actual number of sold units?

Do retailers report back to them? Are they actively polling? Are they using established market research firms? Are they just taking the shipped numbers to retailers from before the last ordered shipment? Do they have their own big net of market researchers around the world?

We regard the numbers companies give us as the most reliable. But how can we be sure that they're not just pulling these out of their ass?

Or worse, using insiderp.

I can tell you that 15 years ago when I ran a number of Best Buy stores, I could tell you how many PS2's sold on any given day at the company and how many were instock company wide.

That was 15 years ago.  I would find it hard top believe that by now, almost every retailer has some level of electronic inventory.  So, getting the totals for atleast months end if not weekly/daily should not be too hard.

Yes, but how does another company acquire these numbers? Are they ordered to report them? Is Sony going around and asking nicely? If I look at all the estimations research firms have to make I doubt information like this is freely available.

I believe they are calling shipped sold to customers(Bestbuy, Target, Futureshop,Amazon).

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

I can tell you that LARGE vendors like Sony or M$ get whatever sales data they want from companies that are reselling their products.  It is actually extremely helpful in helping both companies keep products in stock for customers.  I think Sony or M$ could tell you almost any given day how many systems are sold if they wanted to.  Their just isn't a lot of benefit to give the copetition the info.  All of these 3rd party companies put togehter the info for sale to competing companies.  Sony doesn't need NPD to tell them the PS4's sales, they want the sales numbers of the XB1 and WiiU.

One might get a different impression when reading NPD threads on VGC.

Goes to show you the knowledge base of most of the people here.  They take tidbits of information and jump to lots of conclusions.  I don't bother to normally argue too much in the NPD threads, as most people have a console wars agenda and don't really want to talk sense.

In Japan, they know each customer by name...

Okay, that was really funny. I genuinely laughed :D

Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you are necessarily right.

They do what everyone else does. Make it up and hope for the best.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!
