Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Rise of the Tomb Raider Timed Exclusive for Xbox

Josiah said:
I have read that this is a timed exclusive for a few months, I have read this is a yearly exclusive, I have read this is an Xbox One exclusive, and I have read this is an Xbox family exclusive like Titanfall. Which is it?

It's definately not an XB family exclusive. I'm guessing yearly exclusive like the first Mass Effect because MS is rumored to be publishing the game. If SE publishes, then it will probably be timed for a few months.

Wow just got off of work and I see this! Complete meltdowns! Well I would like to give my opinion on it.

I don't think it was very smart to upset fans that pretty much made TR a household name for money. Then at the same time, this is a great move by Microsoft. They sure do know how to make those NDA's very hush hush! Even when PS did their exclusive deals, they didn't say it wasn't coming to other consoles. Still, it's a great move for Xbox nonetheless. However, now SE will have to deal with the backlash if it doesn't come to PS and/or PC.

I have to say that I didn't like that SE attempted to butter up PS/PC fans by saying the arcade title is coming to those said platforms. Guess what...it's coming to Xbox too! So that means nothing. Now here's the dumbest response I've heard in a month now. Tomb Raider: Definitive version is available on PS4! Well it's also available on Xbox 1. Tell me how this is a plus for PS/PC fans?! Dude probably should have kept his mouth close with those 2 irrelevant statements. We already know that "arcade" game is coming to other platforms and gamers already have the other games. We don't need you to tell us the PS4 version of TR is available. We have it!

This isn't me jumping on SE per se. It's more of me knocking down the PR statement they gave to soothe PC/PS gamers. Sometimes it's best not to say anything at all and let the fans calm down a bit. Well I hope it does well for Crystal Dynamics and the Xbox community. No need in shooting something down because it's not on the preferred console of choice.

I agree with you on all points except where you say that this is somehow a good move by MS.  I think the negativity will outweigh any benefit they see.  It IS great for Xbox fans who have already invested in an XB1...everyone else?  Not so much.  Tomb Raider is not going to move hardware.  ESPECIALLY when it is going up against a similar game on the PS4 launching near the same time (Uncharted)!

You are right about the comments though...saying "we have a game for you...it's the crappy arcade title" sounds WAY too close to "we have a console for offline gamers, it's called the 360"!  Same with "be happy with the old game we just re-did for you".  Yes, he most certainly should have just shut up a few sentences back.

I understand where you're coming from. I guess it is bad for gamers as a whole because one audience won't be able to play the game. However, I feel as though Xbox needs a boost. It's taking a beating as of now. This seems like bad news now for PS/PC owners, but more games are coming between now and next year in Dec 2015. Not to mention all of those titles that will be annonced at next years TGS, E3, Gamescon, etc. I myself have never played a Tomb Raider a day in my life, so this has no bearing on me.

Anyway, yeah his last statements were complete b.s. to me. Could've just said that we haven't abandoned PS fans and PC fans. More games are coming your way in the future. Something like that, if you had to say something.

I'm asking again. Can someone explain to me why this is such a big deal?
It is a deal, yes, but it's not that big. This game isn't Titanfall or Final Fantasy. It's probably not even a Destiny alpha. It will sell decently but not too much. Wouldn't be surprised if it even trails behind Watch Dogs.

Is That particular game really such a big deal? I mean it's not like MS bought the IP.

Feel free to accuse me of damage control but I honestly don't get it.
For the record I played the last game and enjoyed it thoroughly(on PC).

I agree I dont think this will have a big impact on sales for the One. People (Including myself) are mostly shocked that MS was willing to spend so much money (Persumably) to get this exclusivty and that Crystal Dynamics and all there financial drama with the franchise decided to agree to this deal and basically miss out on the biggest console on the market.

I guess it was a good deal for SE as they can now probably be sure to make it profitable. I'm always for SE making profit :)

Some people are missing an important fact here. A lot of guys here grew up with Lara Croft on Playstation almost two decades ago. And most of them probably still prefer Playstation today. I can understand that some people really dispise this action.

It's pretty much the same if say Gears of War or Donkey Kong went muliplat this generation, and then became exclusive on PS5.

It's a cheap move and all it accomplishes is pissing of a lot of PS4 gamers.

and the reason for that is because sony paid for it to not be on other platforms

I'm not sure that's it. Remember Nintendo was still doing cartridges back then. Imagine how many cartridges it would have took to get the game running on there. Both Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy. SE just went with the most probable and larger console install base at the time.

I have an XBone but I don't like these types of moves so I won't be buying it out of principle. Perhaps years later for $5 used.

I still have TR 2013 sitting in my PS+ backlog but I got so burned by the shitty TR Underworld I still haven't picked it up. This move plus my experience with crystal dynamics tomb raiders has really soured me on the franchise.
