Forums - Gaming - RUMOUR: Sony Working on New PS4 and PS3 Video Streaming Application

Media streaming and applications are still a bit weak on the PS4, and there’s definitely more room for improvement. It seems that Sony is working on it, as revealed by a new career opportunity ad published by SCEE seeking a Web Developer.

Based in Central London, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s (SCEE) R&D Group report into the global R&D division based in Tokyo and provides a range of services that support the development of games on the PlayStation family of products (primarily PlayStation®3, PlayStation®Vita, and PlayStation®4) for both SCEE’s own internal studios and its third party partners throughout Europe and Australasia.

The role involves the implementation of a JavaScript front-end UI for a video streaming application on PlayStation®3 and PlayStation®4.
You will be in a team of JavaScript and C/C++ engineers, and will be responsible for helping implement the web-based Application UI to the specification outlined in the design using SCEE’s own proprietary framework.

No further clues were given about the nature of the application. All we know is that the app will be on both PS4 and PS3, but there are no hint on what kind of purpose it will specifically serve. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait an official announcement to know more.

The PS5 Exists.

If they treat it like they treat Music Unlimited, it will probably suck or be too small to care about.

seems like an obvious move.

they have streaming technology in gaikia/psnow.  they have a wealth of movie and tv show content.   netflix is very successful.

sony would be dumb not to have a video streaming service availible.   ..but they better not limit it to just playstation.  that shit needs to be on xbox, wiiU, blu ray players, smart TVs, PCs, smartphones, ect.

and why would they want to do that?

Because Sony has a lot of content and scoping it to only their platform will limit Sony ability to sell to a much wider audience.  Even MS is learning that in this day and age, if you are a content provider, its best to get your content on as many devices as possible.  Wasting a lot of time, money and resources to build a delivery system only to lock it in our eco system could kill or make it very limited and thus not compete with other services.  There is to much competition in this space to believe that limiting the service to just Sony console will be a selling feature.  It would be a nice add on but it would have a hard time challenging the other services that work on pretty much everything.

I wont buy digital movie content that only plays on Apple or Playstation or Google... it has to be cross-platform regardless of vendor.
