I think the vigilante shot RCT to test his claim, because that makes sense, or that there might be some other less likely but not farfetched scenarios, like a serial killer who planned on pretending to be a vigilante until RCT's claim got called into question, or a mafia faction that wanted to keep the reality of a second faction a secret that was planning to have the killing member claim to be vigilante.
