Forums - Sales - JRPG Sales Discussion

Made this thread because of the usual JRPGS bomb comment on every thread. Last Gen only 10 Jrpgs Broke the 1 million Sales Mark. People have crazy expectations if they think JRPGs are casual titles and have to sell millions to be a success. If the System with the Highest Userbase Ever only had 8 Million Sellers, and only 17 games broke the 350k sales mark, how would you define a JRPGs success?

Blue Dragon has already sold 460k, and its considered a complete failure, but the userbase on the  xbox 360 is 1/10th of the PS2, and it already sold enough to place it on the 15th place among PS2's JRPG Sales. I would say its a damn impressive feat, and a success.

Lost Odysseyhas sold over 200k already, and its considered a BOMB, yet it still has to be released in Europe. It had a spectacular debut on the US by selling 100k. So far it's on the 27th place among the PS2's JRPG Sales. This game could end up selling 500k. Dare i say, another success for a JRPG.

Eternal Sonata, sent to die as most people said, has sold 210k, it would place on the 29th place among Ps2's JRPG sales. With the PS3's upcoming Port.. both versions combined could end up selling 500k. Not bad, but not good.

This only strengthens your point... but why are Xmen and Marvel games listed?

But yeah. RPGS not named Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest tend to not sell.... well anything not made by square in anycase.

A lot of these games don't even have American sales data, let alone European data. I agree with you on a very general level, but I don't think you have enough information to make some of the generalizations you have made.

Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey also had more hype behind them than some of these games as well.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

The sales of most of the PS2 RPGs isn’t up to date, or lack US and PAL numbers.

One of the producers of Level 5 said in a Spanish magazine called Hobby Consolas that Rogue Galaxy had sold about 400,000 in Europe and America, which would put it at about 800,000 worldwide. Dark Cloud 1 & 2 are millions sellers, and there are probably a lot of games there which should be close to the 1m mark.

So your arguments are false, and then again, you should compare big-budget games with big-budget games, and not big-budget games with low-budget games which barely get any marketing (Disgaea,Air Tornelico).

Yes. Exactly what i always thought. Good thread!

He has about as much as you do.

Dark Cloud 1 was definitely a million seller (had a greatest hits run).  I am pretty sure 2 was, but I have no proof.

Actually, Dark Cloud 2 didn't sell all that great.  The sales were decent but not great.
