The problem is that 8K (4320p) is coming faster than most think. 4K (2160P) is acting like 720P did for 1080P; a precursor for the HDTV era. NHK will start doing wide-area trials in 2016 with the aim of broadcasting the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in glorious 8K.

Granted, pushing those 33MP will be challenging even for the most technologically advanced PC's in 2020. For that, it is worth looking at the performance of two of the best GPUs that came out 7 years prior to 2013; 8800GTX and 2900XT.

In all, by 2019/2020, 4K will be very common and 8K will be on the cutting edge. Consoles will need to support 4K even if at 30fps and/or with upscaling. It won't be funny to still play at inferior resolutions.

After playing LoU Remastered at 60fps I actually support the higher framerate over resolution argument (though I could stand for prettier as well) so I hope they go 1440p at 60 before 4k at 30

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

who says next gen consoles must adopt 4k or 8k ? what would be the point ? unless you game one feet away from your 60" tv anything higher then 1080p is pointless.

Improved everything or 4k, tough choice.

I don't see 4k becoming popular in gaming anytime soon. I mean at 1080p we are already having trouble with space on the ps4's and Xbone's hard drive and I highly doubt we will be seeing 5k hard drives any time soon. And people saying 8k will become popular that's just whack, by that logic tv screen sizes will also need to increased remarkebly and I bet we won't be seeing 100 inch tv's become popular anytime soon.

Back in 2011 I told my friends next gen games might be 720p after 2015/2016. At first all games might have 1080p. They laughed at me, saying all next gen games will be 1080p. Look at it now.

As far reality, 4k is "double" of 1080p and do you know how much processing power does it require? A lot. It becomes even bigger issue when you need to make it happen in a $399 system. It wont be happening. Plus it will take time to 4k TV / monitors become our purchase range cheap. I dont see almost everyone getting a 4k TV / Monitor by 2020.

4K is already getting some market and if we consider this gen to take 5-6 years, it would be very possible the next systems would be capable of doing so.
Also, I expect the majority of game to stick with 1080p or something more because it's already good enough to look at, but top games would try 4K without a doubt if available (very possible in 5-6years), so I do think the next gen can achieve 4K with certain games, like ND games (if they still were top class in that time) or the likes.

See ya till 2020 when next gen starts (If I dont get banned or something other happens like zombie apolocalypse). This thread will be gold. Lol.

I predict; no new PS, XB or Wii.

I'll give you some:

Nintendo Home Console
-Will happen
-Will be in the same power neighborhood and architecture as other available new consoles at launch.
-Will have a next-gen touchscreen controller, and support 4 at once.
-Will share an OS and eshop with other available Nintendo devices.
-Will use an nVidia chip.

Nintendo Handheld
-Will become a platform for several devices.
-Will include a phone, a tablet and a child-friendly gaming device.
-"Tablet" will have removable slots for sticks, pads, buttons, NFC, etc.
-Will share software with Wii U and next-gen system.
-Will function as controller for home console.

Microsoft
-Will not make a traditional console.
-Will instead turn XBox into a platform for gaming/entertainment PC's.
-Various XBox models, perpetual upgrades.
-Will attempt to make PC gaming consumer friendly and the go-to format for gamers.

Sony Home Console
-Will make a PS5.
-Will follow PS tradition.

Sony Handheld
-PSP/Vita line will end.
-Handheld gaming will merge with XPeria phone line.

Very much possible. Especially microsoft. They might go back to windows gaming roots.

1. PS5 / Next Xbox might implement 1440p as new standard. While "many" games might stuck to 1080p number. Those who are expecting 4K resolution from console please check reality.

2. Games will sacrifice 60fps for graphics; again.

3. If nintendo makes a home console; not handheld and home console hybrid then we will see tablet controller getting omitted.

1 - I think 1080p will still be standard. 1080p scales perfectly to 4K without artifacts, 1440p will need upscaling and image will look worse on 4K TVs. The gen after that one will see 4K.

2 - Yes, that's pretty much a rule. Casual public doesn't cares, so why will you halve your power by doubling your fps? Everytime a dev goes for 60fps a competitor will go for 30fps and blow them out of water graphically and the public will go for the prettier game.

3 - Agree, no more tablets and we won't see an hybrid. Handhelds are too weak. If Ninty goes for hybrid, it will be their last console ever. They will do a normal console more like a GC or N64. At least, I hope they do.
