Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation created the Industry, Xbox changed the playing field

There is a word for the claim that Sony invented the industry. That word is false. It's simply not true in any way shape or form. You can't even really claim Nintendo invented the industry. You can arguably give the credit to Atari for making the first popular multi cartridge machine or Fairchild for making the first multi cartridge machine. There really isn't any way to say Sony made the market. At best a poor choice of words, at worst just plain silly.

The analysis here is laughably biased. Firstly it completely discounts any company that is not Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony. Sega for instance had a lot to do with changing the demographics or gaming. Games like Doom also had a lot to do with expanding the market, and that would spillover to console gaming largely with the advent of Halo. It ridiculously discounts Microsofts success as nothing more than taking advantage of Sony's stumble and not crediting them with excellent marketing and some key titles. It also discounts the Wii's role in expanding the market, which undoubtedly spilled over to the 360 and PS3.

I don't mean to discredit what Sony did, but all the same, you can't write off any success Ninty and Microsoft had as either a slip up on Sony's part or a straight fluke. This is an analysis that only carries some sort of weight because Sony is doing well in a young generation which will inevitably see the pendulum swing closer to equilibrium between XBox and Playstation with the Wii U as a wildcard, but its claims are specious.

The problem we have these days is that "History is written by the winners". We have these young guys that didn't actually experience what was going on at the time thinking that they know what they're talking about. It's like me trying to tell someone about World War II after reading about it in a text book to someone that actually fought in the battles. It just doesn't work. I'll give Sony credit for creating a platform (not even the format which was used by many consoles before the PS1) and letting 3rd parties have a lot of freedoms. I'll leave it at that.

I disagree with the online bit because PC did it first and did it better (still does it better than anyone)
Xbox brought nothing but negative things as far as i'm concerned
but that's just my two cents and don't want to get into arguments

Atari
Nintendo
Sega
Sony
Microsoft

All 5 very important. All 5 contributed a great deal to shape the industry into what it is today.

This thread has nothing to do with PC gaming. Its home consoles.

It's the gaming industry. I don't create bubbles to suit my agenda, everything exists in the real world, there is no universe where only home consoles are playable/useable

If that was the case wouldn't he just say PC created the industry and changed the playing field? Its obvious that the OP has no intention of this being a PC gaming discussion and you knew that. But whatever, try and downplay Xbox all you want.

Agreed with the title. Playstation saved gaming industry twice. With PS1 that attracted and retained mature gamers who were suffering from fatigue for playing the same game over and over again. And PS4 saved the console industry with their stance against DRM. Long live playstation.

What a relief, now they can play a different game over and over again!

atleast they got more to chose from than on nintendo consoles.

I will have to agree with the OP. Sony didnt start or pioneer console gaming as it is, but the created the console gaming industry as we know it today.

That's another way of saying they changed it. If you see it this way - the industry today isn't the one Sony created. That was the industry back in the 6th gen. Today the industry has online, achievements, focus on shooters and realistic graphics. The things MS introduced with the XBOX and expanded ith the 360. Today we have no longer the industry Playstation created, this is the industry Xbox created.

Yep, but alot of people would never admit that because they prefer to knock down MS.

If OP was really trying to say the industry as it is today is mostly due to Sony, I would have to agree with you and say MS had more influence on the way PS4 and Xbox 1  currently are than Sony.
