After 34 years on this earth and spending about 30 of them playing games, I have finally come to the realization that of the big three, only Nintendo is fit to carry the torch. It dawned on me, oddly enough, as I was recently transferring my Wii data to my newly procured Wii-U console.
For those of you who don't know, when you transfer data between the two consoles, there is this really cool animation which starts by showing Pikmin going into the Wii and carrying the games and data out of it. After this really long trek, they hop aboard a space ship that blasts off toward the Wii-U. Then, when you switch over to the new system, it show the guys landing "inside" at which point they finish their little voyage and you get some sort of celebration. The whole thing was entirely surprising and unexpected. Which leads me to my overall point.
Would MS or Sony have spent man hours creating something like that if you could transfer data between PS3/PS4 or Xbox360/Xbone? Probably not. More than likely, you'd get some basic black screen with a status bar and that's it.
That's the difference between Nintendo and the other two imo. While Sony was making their money selling their Walkman and Microsoft was developing the first Windows software for PCs, Nintendo was making game consoles and software that ARE STILL BEING ENJOYED TODAY. They didn't enter into an established console industry. They INVENTED one. They were and are solely about gaming.
To me, that's worth more than the weight of gold. It's one thing for a company to want to make money. It's another for a company to have employee's who have a love and a real passion for the artistic side of their jobs. Nintendo is filled with these people from top to bottom. Iwata is the president, yet he still produces software. How many companies can say their president does that?
In short, there is a reason why MS calls their console an "entertainment device" (which is what sparked my entire post. Once I saw that, I immediately rolled my eyes). They don't care one damn bit about gaming. All they care about is profit. Sony is only a little bit better in this regard because they have a few people in key roles who developed software in the past. But in the end, when you look at it, even they are more profit focused than Nintendo. I mean, look at the Order. Just another (albeit great looking) ultra violent, murder game based on a cover system and gunplay. In other words, generic cash grab. Sony is in this to capitalize on trends just they were in the mid 90's with the original PS.
I'd rather support a company that sees eye to eye with my beliefs than one who's only goal is the bottom line. But hey, that's just me. Maybe you don't see it that way, or maybe you don't care. That's ok. But I just wanted to share my point of view on the subject.
