sigh.. the ignorance is astounding. The effects of prohibition are doing more damage then the drug itself. People are always going to smoke and studies in countries and places that have legalized have shown that it doesn't increase the the amount of users. That coupled with the fact that its effects are tepid compared to alcohol, prohibition isn't the right answer. At the same time prohibition creates a black market, fuels organized crime profits, and ruins lives for people who want to dabble in it. Why should someone who likes to smoke a joint on a friday night be treated differently than a guy who likes a scotch and cigar?
So we have prohibition, that does nothing to effect who uses it, creates a black market and fuels crime, ruins lives with punishments for petty victimless reasons, and wastes billions of dollars in the process.
vs
A legalized, regulated and taxed system that has controls and safeguards to keep toxicity additives away, and limit minors from being able to buy it. Its easier for a kid to buy weed, than it is to get booze, because a dealer isnt going to check for ID. oh, and creates millions in tax revenue. Not to mention creating a new legit industry for an economy that could sure use it.
