Maybe in 1998 but this 2014 where you get 1080p on a 70 inch Flat screen. Thats like a 35 inch screen for 2 players. And 17 inch screen four players So screens are big enough to handle four screens and be comfortable. Picture this when 35 inch screen was huge back then and resolution wasnt talked about.

I play on a 55" tv and I just can't do split screen on it. Also, other games give you the option to this with Wii U and after playing local co op with the gamepad as a separate screen, split screen is nowhere near as awesome as playing that way.
But I get what your saying and I hear it all the time from my buddies who come over and play split screen in front of me. I just prefer the other way, it's one of the reasons I have grown to love my Wii U for local co op.

55 ain't bad either 27 split in two s 11 four way. I dont know how old you are but remember playing Golden Eye on a 27 or 19 inch tube 4 ways damn that was brutal lol. But yeah the gamepad function is awesome reason why i think it is the best console of this gen.

It's the aspect ratio guys, not the size.
4:3 horizontal split screen basically gave you both widescreen tv's, did for mario kart, did for sonic 3.
16:9 and 16:10 only feasable split screen is vertical, which gives you the odd aspect ratio of very similar to a 4:3 display on it's side, more vertical space than horizontal space, which is odd.
16:9 and 16:10 with horizontal split screen squishes the vertical axis too much to be useful.
