At the end of June, Wii will have passed PS4 as the fastest selling console of all time for that timeframe. People need to realize how extremely frontloaded this generation is and how fast it is dropping of. The Wii my have been an anomaly, but can't be excluded from the comparison just because it sold extremely well.

Only, it's not dropping off. At least not in a bad way. It's summer; nothing sells well during summer, especially first year consoles. Not sure how many different ways I can say it.

Also, Wii sales can absolutely have an asterisk next to them because the majority of people who bought one had never owned a console, weren't gamers and had no intention of buying another console (see: Wii U sales). Therefore it isn't representative of the actual market.

And alot of people bought  PS2 for its DVD capabilities, yet both PS2 and Wii went on to sell huge amount of games. Anomalies occur, but trying to close our eyes and not pretend that we are seeing a massive decline, is to lie to ourselves. What the decline in sales from PS2 to PS3 and fro Wii to WiiU show is that gamers are a more mobile group than we often think, most switch between consoles or own multiple consoles.

That's pure bull, how can there be a "massive decline" this gen which has also seen record sales on console launches

Example

PS2 total sales 155 million

Xbox total sales 24 million

Gamecube total sales 21.74 million

Total sales that gen just over 200 million

PS3 80 million

Xbox 80 million

Wii 100 million

Total sales 260 million

This gen ps4 and xbone have crushed records of previous launch sales and you still think it's declining???

Shouldn't Xbone be higher? Its price was cut 25% and there's no major bump. Europe still clearly doesn't give a fu**. Is MS running out of options here?

Its higher than the 360 at the same time of year in 2006 without all of the countries.

Oh, is it? I suppose the market in a whole market is in nice shape then

I couldn't even see this in my hot topics cause it was filled with mostly pointless threads...

Everything under 100k is bad. But at least X1 did better and beat PS4 in NA this week.

How is it impossible that there's a decline? So if something has experienced growth over time, it is impossible for it to enter a state of decline? That's how markets work, all of them.

The Wii alone sold more than the PS4, One and Wii U combined at this point in time during the first summer with all three out, this is nothing short a clear-cut indicator that we're seeing a market contraction and the front-loaded launches only show that consoles are being more affected by revisionist design philosophy like tablets and phones and the overall market movements in consumer electronics as a market segment.

There will be a decline, to deny that is folly at this point.

Yeah, and I'm talking about Europe. WW its a little short.

Xbox is gaining some ground.

Judging by the numbers, this will be a very very long generation.

Why are people saying that these numbers are bad? You guys really have short memories.

I think it's because we were teased with record breaking numbers earlier.

So most people expected the trend to continue.

But both PS4/X1 HAVE broken records. For their first years, both have SHATTERED what their predecessors did.

There are twice as many combined at this point than PS360 comparatively.

Not sure what you're getting at.

Yes but they're slowing down.

Some people probably expected them to continue selling at an abnormally high rate.

After rechecking the previous gen sales, they're doing fine. Sales do dip at this time every year.

That's the point people are trying to tell to the people saying they doing so much better than the PS3 or 360. They broke records for the first 24 hours and the first two months, but they dropped off really fast to what we are seeing now.

Meh, the decline in consoles is mostly from the wii going to the the wii U. There is not really a decline for the MS and Sony consoles. Thus some of us are not very concerned about the decline.

Pretty much this. Everyone seems to be comparing the PS4 and Xbox One to the Wii instead of the disappointing console that actually is its predecessor.
