or atleast the mass market strategy 

Casual gamers got the wii and got hooked on wii sport, wii dogs and all that stuff.
the only semi casual game they also picked up was mario kart wii ( best selling racer of all time ).
And they loved it, from the easy tracks to the for them impossible rainbow road.

mario kart wii u is the problem here word to mouth goes that the new mario karts rainbow road isn't hard at all, they miss the challenge of staying ahead of the leader and try to avoid being lapped.

Yep. Add a mediocre battle mode and they way they destroyed the epic MK64 RainbowRoad.
