Forums - Microsoft - Phil Spencer Promises Xbox One Family Sharing Is Still on the Roadmap; Explains Challenges Holding it Back

When the Xbox One was first introduced, the Family Sharing feature was one of the very positive ideas that many regret not having made it to the released console, but Xbox Division head Phil Spencer promises that it’s still on the roadmap, alongside others like digital pre-load.

Spencer also explained that while the features are still being worked on, there are objective challenges that need to be overcome before they can see the light.

During the same podcast it was suggested that it could be done only with digital games, but Spencer mentioned that it wouldn’t be fair to those that bought the disk without knowing they wouldn’t benefit from the feature in the future. That’s why he want to be sure that the feature is done the right way. He also added that Microsoft is still looking at digital distribution improvements like pre-load. They just want to do it “at the right time and especially in the right way.”

If Family Sharing was one of your favorite dishes in the original Xbox One menu, there’s still hope. We’ll just have to wait and see if Spencer and his team will manage to overcome the DRM challenges that are holding the feature back.

So maybe end of the year beginning of next I hope lol. They could do it so when you turn a disk game into a digital one after so many days you have to reinsert the same disc to confirm you still own it

Sony is doing somethin kinda similar. Like you can invite people to play with you even if they don't own the game. But this will be much better if Microsoft can actually implement it.

just make the family sharing for digital games. its really that simple and people wont be upset about it. it gives people more choices and there is nothing wrong with that.

Make it digital only.

Solved.

Then those that argue for physical, physical, physical can follow the model, as demonstrated, of handing the disc over in person. The rest of us with digital content can move into the 21st century.

I don't see why it cant be digital only. Indeed, it should be digital only to force the issue. Yeah... I said it.

Don Mattrick is that you?

Yeah if you hate xbox.

Seriously the need to enable this for digital games only. Everybody will be happy then. You can buy a disk like 20 years ago and share it to your friends/family. Or you can buy games digitally (100% of my Xbox One games are digital) and enable this family check-out/check-in sharing system.

Exactly what's the problem with what he suggested? People who want physical games can keep their physical restrictions and the people who want more from their digital games can choose to move forward.

Agree, make it digital only. Physical games already have a mechanism for lending.

Allow you to "loan" a digital game to a friend for a set amount of time. 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks.
When your game is loaned out, you cannot play it.
It automatically becomes available to you again when the loan is over.

Limits to allow content providers to agree to this:
Allow content providers to lock games from lending for a set period of time. 30-60 days after purchase?
Limit number of time games can be loaned out. (once a month, 4 times a year, etc)

Like said before, there is no reason why they can't do this for digital games now. I mean they have 'main' accounts, don't they? Just make one account the main account of a family and any other lesser account connected to that main one (max of say 4 so 5 accounts total) can play that game.

Then Gold Live should be done by mac address, so needs to be paid once per machine. I thought this was basic database stuff.... maybe not.

Hmm, pie.

Agreed. If MS wants to convert people to digital purchases, they need to give them a reason to do it.  Forcing them to buy digital does not work.  (they already tried that and failed)  They need to make digital purchases more appealing.  This is the way to do it.
