Forums - Sony - Eurogamer Driveclub Preview: The racing game to beat this year?

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-06-18-driveclub-could-be-the-racing-game-to-beat-this-year

"It's all being complemented now by a full weather system being prepared for release soon after launch, and being shown off for the first time at E3. On the Scottish glens of Loch Duich, turbulent weather rolls in, skies thickening before bursting onto the roads. Crowds at the side of the track reach for their macs and umbrellas, winds tug at the trackside scenery while puddles form in the divots and dips of the road surface, as well as across the grass of the glens and across the gravel - Evolution's very, very proud of its gravel, and rightly so.."

"Over in Norway, dawn breaks over powdered mountains, sending a dreamy purplish blue out across the environment. The heat from the sun dynamically melts the snow, with northern-facing surfaces reacting first. As that sun sets and a storm rolls in, road-signs are reflected in the slicked tarmac, while headlights catch individual rain droplets. The attention to detail is underlined when Evolution pauses the action and sweeps through the static action, ascending up through the clouds - DriveClub's game world is rendered all the way to the heavens, some two kilometres up."

"Some 12 months on from an unconvincing debut, DriveClub has benefited from a remarkable makeover. Is it enough to shoulder the weight of being Sony's big first-party PlayStation 4 release for the tail-end of 2014? Perhaps not, but it's enough to ensure that, in a strangely busy time for the racing genre, DriveClub's in the best possible place it could be."

I'm amazed at how far the game has come in the last year.

I'm still not convinced DC will turn out well (nor do i particularly care :p), but it sure is nice to look at. For a track based game the render distance is pretty ridiculous.

im more interested in the crew or fh2. i just dont see what sets this game apart. but thats just my opinion

Nah, Mario Kart 8 was the best this year and then probably Forza Horizon 2.

I think at the end of the day what sets DC apart is that it is just going to flat out do everything better than has been done before.  That means best graphics, dynamic maps, big varied racing options, and an insane attention to detail on every car (And there will be a ton of them).

Add to that its superior multiplayer and clan features, and I could see how this might become a sleeper hit.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

Looks awesome and with 55 tracks there will be plenty to do and look at, much more variation than open world has to offer. I was getting a bit burnt out on open world since everyone is doing it nowadays (except sim racers where you already know 90% of the tracks) A collection of original tracks, hand crafted for best flow for racing, yes please.

well, i only paid 20€ for the full version so even if the game is only ok i'm fine.

must-have-list for platforms i don't own yet:

WiiU: Donkey Kong

XBone: Dead Rising 3, Ryse

fh2 has 1000 member clans, plus arnt there only like 50 cars?  and i dont see how itll have superior multi since its just the same race around a track but i agree it could very well be a sleeper hit but wat could hurt it is the ps plus verison

Yeah I gotta agree there.  Ever since I found out it wasn't going to be a launch window game I assumed they were going to get rid of the whole PS+ idea for it.  I can't wait to get a free version, but then again I think I would rather have them do well!

game looks amazing to me. i've got to look into it but i'll probably upgrade my free ps+ version. the attention to detail is just head and shoulder above the rest of the pack. and then a focus on clubs instead of winning is great for me because otherwise i'd lose every race. :P
