Forums - Sales - 6th Generation NPD Comparisons! (WiiU Vs Gamecube and Xbox One vs Xbox)

Decided to look back at Xbox and Gamecube sales at the start of their life in US (VGChartz doesn't offer this info sadly). Have not done PS2 vs PS4 because I do not have the first 8 months NPD of PS2, if anybody has those and would like me to add them in I'd very much appreciate it! From what I know, the last 6 months of it's full first year, PS2 did 300k+ every month. But a lower launch means PS4 is ahead in overall sales.

WiiU Vs. Gamecube.

As you can see WiiU has never outsold Gamecube in any month and so the gap has grown to 1.77m. The following months for Gamecube show, 124k, 127k and 100k, after that it's still above 100k and even achieves 750k+ and 1.163m in Nov and Dec respectively. Suggesting WiiU is never going to overtake Gamecube in the US.

Here is the Xbox Vs. Xbox One charts. XB1 has done better than Xbox Original ever since launch save for this month. April 02 saw a price cut announcement (similar to this month) thus May 02 sales are much higher.

Ugh the chart functionality on this site is shocking!

It's unfair to compare the wii u to the gamecube, the gamecube was a selling beast

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I don't think WiiU will ever catch up to the GameCube and there is a real chance X1 will stay under XB. Looks like PS4 will barely break the 100 million as well. The market is just smaller these days, probably because last gen consoles are not out for the count yet, PC's are much better for gaming than they were 10 years ago and casuals are harder to attract because of all the mobiel devices that could be gamed on.

11m in the US lifetime is a respectable figure in this day and age, funny how back then it was a massive failure (as was Xbox's 16m) I guess compared to PS2's then 30m+ and eventual 46m it just seemed really bad.

Stay under from this point forward or lifetime? Cos it's ahead 500k so far.

Seece, you should do a PS4 vs PS2 one too, could be interesting.

Edit: Sorry, didn't saw your warning on the 1st paragraph about the PS2 NPD numbers... If I find something I will post here.

I think it will outperform the original lifetime, as Microsoft still has a better fanbase outside of the US today compared to when they just launched their first console. But it will stay under Lifetime in the US or just barely beat it. And yes it will stay under from this point forward in it's lifetime until it gets to under the 300 dollar mark. The original XB was not as expensive when it pulled those numbers.

Cool info!!!! I have a request cuz im too lazy to do the math lol but could u give a running total for each console up to this point?
