Forums - Gaming - I'm buying a PS3, but I really wish I wasn't.

although the original post is a bit of a ramble, I know where you are coming from, when sony entered the gaming scene i was reluctant to buy into the PS brand. I hated how they were making gaming trendy to non gamers. They were truely the pioneers of the casual gamer, which back then was classed as 'mainstream gaming', much the same as the wii situation now.

When it was launched (the PS1) it had nothing but hype to fuel sales and the saturn absolutely wiped the floor with it, Sega Rally, VF and SFZ were top of my priorities and I couldnt see any need for a PS1, I stuck to my guns and paid more for the underpowered Saturn while everyone else bought the new sony with the 1 track wonder, Ridge Racer.

Over time Sony just gained too many third party franchises, as well as many being born on it, They were incredibly lucky and did everything right back then. Its still the case, if you want to play the majority of Japan produced games, you still need a playstation and the fact it now comes with BD is a bonus, just as the PS2 was with DVD.

I think Sony's main problem is they are no longer appealing to that mainstream/casual gamer they invented. they started the ball rolling and nintendo picked it up when it was at full momentum and gave it another kick.

Although I do still dislike Sony, or more accurately the Playstation, Id take a japanese produced machine over anything M$ produce without a second thought. At least with major Japanese support Sonys console relains to be a Console, not a console trying to be a PC.

It is/was a case of since Sega have gone (and untill the wii, so had Nintnedo), Sony were the only option.

that shows how attractive the console is (now) - even people who hate it buy it

I'm quite sure, that you will buy more than 10 games for it over it's lifetime, because there will be enough superb exclusive games (Sony is one of the biggest game devs after all).

Lafiel your first sentence pretty well sums up what I was trying to get across. Heh thanks for making my point for me. Sorry about the run on sentences there guys, I don't regulary post on a lot of forums. And Lafiel, hunter_alien you're right, I probably won't regret the purchase in the end, but right now for me I don't feel it's worth a purchase as a gaming console at this point in it's life.

Ok I did my part, I bought No More Heroes, but they were out of Zach and Wiki.

Ok got Zach and Wiki, now if I could just finally finish Twilight Princess so I can play all these Wii games I got waiting. And no I won't buy Okami.

DNF, now there is a game that should have been scrapped completely. Reminds me of a kid whose been in school for 12 years and still doesn't know what he wants to do. At one point you just need to man up and get a job.

1/ I doubt BR was/is so important for the PS3 sales outside of NA
But it will be later this year, I believe.

2/ If u think by yourself and stop listenning people talking about softwares sales, u will see that PS3 userbase RELATIVELY buy more multiplateform games than Xbox360 userbase : the assumption PS3 owners dont buy games is COMPLETELY stupid.

In PAL, for example, despite being 1.5M behind the Xbox360, PS3 owners bought more CoD4/AC/DMC4 than the Xbox360 owners.
I know it is in part du to the lack of good PS3 exclusive during the same period (Unchartred ? dont know), but u still can't say : "PS3 users dont buy games".

3/ Next time dont buy a console u dont want ...

Time to Work !

Ratchet of Clank:Tools of Destruction, Heavenly Sword and Warhawk are good exclusives on the PS3. Oh yeah there is also Lair the best game ever. Noone bad mouths Lair, or I will f***** have ya.

I agree, there's still an assumption that software sales are terrible. I think the only place this is true is in Japan. European software is already higher than the 360 and American software is doing well relative to it's install base.

I'm just a casual viewer of this site and it's forums, and my first guess would be that the things I'm saying have been said before, but here goes.

I used to be the guy that needed every console. Every since the SNES days. I've got the sega cd AND the neo geo pocket. Anyhow I was that guy till this generation of consoles. I'll admit from the get-go here I've never been a real fan of Sony's attitude. I've bought the systems and alot of games but have always disliked the cockiness, (quotes like "people would buy this system if it was $2000 dollars and had no games" regarding the ps3 haven't done much to change my mind either) the fear of changing their 15 y/o controller, and I've unfairly blamed them for a large part of the demise of the console company I loved, Sega (instead of admitting to myself Sega did it to themselves). Spent alot of money with em, just didn't love em. Anyhow come this generation I've felt along with a couple of my friends, that I could have a solid gaming set up sans the PS3. Now that blu-ray has beat out HD-DVD and with the PS3 being the only current player that is completely future compatible with the coming advances for the format however, I've decided to pick up an 80 gig PS3. Now viewing the sales charts over the last year I've noticed the PS3 just isn't keeping pace when it comes to software sales. I personally can't see myself buying more then 10 games over it's lifespan, as I'll prefer my 360 controller when it comes to multi-console titles. A close friend of mine has come to a similiar conclusion, he plans to buy one for the blu-ray player as well, but he's not even sure if he'll buy games for it. As much as this can be viewed as an anti Sony thread the real issue is that I, as a consumer, am buying a ps3, boosting it's sales, and don't even particulary like the console. I also believe that some of the future sales of this console after the br/hd dvd announcement are not entirely a reflection on the quality of the product as a console, but more so as a good value for a blu-ray player (quality player, good price + ability to play games = bonus). Anyone else feel the same way I do but still plan to buy a PS3 anyway?

My friend is in a similar position to you.  He is looking at getting a PS3, I asked him why? What games do you want? He replied GTA IV...  And that was it!  Just one game!

I informed him that GTA IV will have more content on 360. (he didnt want to pay for a live account to get it)

His friends all have Wii's and 360s so he wanted something different (but he wont be able to play onliine with them/us)

He was also keen on the Blu-Ray player that comes with it stating that its great value/future proof!

Software sales are lower than rivals, especially in US but again based on its install base thats not suprising.  Its not software sales numbers that really matter to gamers though its what games are available!

well, the DLC for GTA4 will cost quite a bit aswell .. wouldn't suprise me, if it was $20-30 per episode (and it will still sell very well), so it's not only the live account he'd have to pay for

lol i was like that with the ps2 i bought it but i really didnt want to.

only reason I got PS2 was Square and Socom... oh yea and online sports games.

I am WEEzY. You can suck my Nintendo loving BALLS!

I actually bought my PS3 primarily for the Blue - ray capability as it was cheaper and better value for money than a stand alone player, but im playing games more and more on the PS3.
