Forums - Gaming - I'm buying a PS3, but I really wish I wasn't.

I'm just a casual viewer of this site and it's forums, and my first guess would be that the things I'm saying have been said before, but here goes.

I used to be the guy that needed every console. Every since the SNES days. I've got the sega cd AND the neo geo pocket. Anyhow I was that guy till this generation of consoles. I'll admit from the get-go here I've never been a real fan of Sony's attitude. I've bought the systems and alot of games but have always disliked the cockiness, (quotes like "people would buy this system if it was $2000 dollars and had no games" regarding the ps3 haven't done much to change my mind either) the fear of changing their 15 y/o controller, and I've unfairly blamed them for a large part of the demise of the console company I loved, Sega (instead of admitting to myself Sega did it to themselves). Spent alot of money with em, just didn't love em. Anyhow come this generation I've felt along with a couple of my friends, that I could have a solid gaming set up sans the PS3. Now that blu-ray has beat out HD-DVD and with the PS3 being the only current player that is completely future compatible with the coming advances for the format however, I've decided to pick up an 80 gig PS3. Now viewing the sales charts over the last year I've noticed the PS3 just isn't keeping pace when it comes to software sales. I personally can't see myself buying more then 10 games over it's lifespan, as I'll prefer my 360 controller when it comes to multi-console titles. A close friend of mine has come to a similiar conclusion, he plans to buy one for the blu-ray player as well, but he's not even sure if he'll buy games for it. As much as this can be viewed as an anti Sony thread the real issue is that I, as a consumer, am buying a ps3, boosting it's sales, and don't even particulary like the console. I also believe that some of the future sales of this console after the br/hd dvd announcement are not entirely a reflection on the quality of the product as a console, but more so as a good value for a blu-ray player (quality player, good price + ability to play games = bonus). Anyone else feel the same way I do but still plan to buy a PS3 anyway?

Ok I did my part, I bought No More Heroes, but they were out of Zach and Wiki.

Ok got Zach and Wiki, now if I could just finally finish Twilight Princess so I can play all these Wii games I got waiting. And no I won't buy Okami.

DNF, now there is a game that should have been scrapped completely. Reminds me of a kid whose been in school for 12 years and still doesn't know what he wants to do. At one point you just need to man up and get a job.

here take this flame suit :)

I completely agree with you that many people are buying PS3 for the blu ray. I see people being sold the ps3 as the whole package to non-gamers: a blu ray player that can also play games. That is why sony needs to develop more games for the casual person who picks up the system as a blu ray player. LBP might be a good title for that but who knows.

Imagine if the could come up with PSN titles that a non gamer would play if they had the opportunity.

What about making a deal with milton bradly that would use the playstation eye of judgment tech for monopoly or even risk!!!! Anyway something like that would give non hard core gamers who pick it up as a blu ray player something else to use it for

I really couldn't comprehend this rambling rant.

Here, take this buddy, for you shall need it..

You know, I couldn't care less for Blu Ray or HD-DVD right now. I have a 68cm CRT TV in the lounge room that struggles to do 576i. When that TV breaks down, I might think about getting a new one to replace it. And then, I might think about buying a BD-ROM drive for my HTPC. Alternatively, I *may* purchase a nice cheap Blu Ray player. If that were the case, and if Blu Ray does indeed become mainstream, I'd be buying a cheaper stand-alone player.

Yes, it has a good price, as long as you're speaking in relative terms. Blu Ray is still too expensive IMHO.

So yeah, I don't feel the same way as you. I don't feel forced into buying it because it's a good BD player. And I don't plan on buying one.

I hope not a lot of people feel as confused as the OP.
I hope some people will be able to explain exactly what the OP want from us.

he wants you to say that the PS3 is not worth buying for the games, only the Blu Ray

I totally agree with most of your points. I think the integrated BR-Player is an important point for many customers of the PS3.
I think customers who only look for games and have a good view over the console market will still prefer the Xbox360, at least in most cases (me prefered the PS3 because of my special taste in games + have a good PC). Thats why the software attachmentrate is comparatively bigger on the Xbox -most of the "real"-gamers bought one. So you can call the BR-Player a disadvantage compared to the "hardcoregamer" image of the Xbox, at least for software sales.

But in the end only the mass-market count and those people don't read forums etc. They only choose cause of brandname and of course the price. I think a casual will more likely know that a PS3 can play BR than that the Xbox have more/better games for his liking.
And that is why I see the Xbox on #3 at the end of this generation, they won't manage to make the Xbox-brand as big and popular worldwide as the PS-brand, at least not in this gen.

btw, I think you should use some breaks in your Text, ll make it a lot easier to read and understand (:

@ Op.

I agree with you on the biggest part. PS3 sales will rise because of Blu-rays momentum that is picking up! Thus X360 will see a downward momentum.

However, i find that the PS3 is the better console (opinion) because it is more reliable (X360 and RROd for example = not buying). And with almost the same price as a stand-alone Blu-ray player i think the PS3 is a great deal! I don't own an X360 so i buy the multiplatform games for t he PS3... But i can understand why you don't. Because the PS3 controller is essentially a PS2 controller with crap-ass motion-sensing and the X360 is better (opinion). But you get used to the Sixaxis! Just like you get used to the Wii-mote!
