 Well, at least they can put the whole HD-DVD v.s. Blu-ray mess behind now. Now they can bake together with smiley faces all day. 

 Toshiba: Hey, IBM, can you tell Sony to pass the butter?

IBM: Why don't you ask Sony yourself, he's right next to you.

Toshiba: We're not talking anymore. He won't let my new disc be successful.

IBM: *sigh* Sony, can you hand the butter over? 

Sony: Sure, IBM. At least I know you're a great friend that won't prolong a disc that's destined to die, only to cause more confusion and frustration to the consumers.

*Toshiba gets up*  

Toshiba: I released mine first! You never let me have what I want and work for first!

*Sony gets up* 

Sony: Yea, and maybe you shouldn't have been sleeping with my video game division's competitor by making him your disc attachment for his system!

*IBM  calls the police (Apple) to calm the situation down*

*Apple walks in*

Apple: Sorry I'm late. We've been busy trying to take down the Microsoft Mafia... They practically own this town, and if we want to have a fighting chance, we have to set our differences aside and unite against him.

A new twist has emerged with the death of HD DVD. After Warner, Best Buy, Walmart and Netflix jumped on the Blu bandwagon, the fate of HD DVD was already sealed.

Sony agreed to sell it microchip processing facilities in western Japan for approximately $835M USD. These facilities currently produce Cell processors and RSX graphic chips. Toshiba will enter the joint venture with Sony on April 1, 2008.

Toshiba, IBM and Sony were the principle developers of the Cell microprocessor, but Toshiba previously showed little interest in using the chip for any of its own projects. Sony touts the Cell broadband engine in its Playstation 3 consoles; IBM uses the Cell processor in high performance computing clusters. Toshiba has vowed to now use the Cell in its upcoming products.

While Toshiba and Sony entered into talks back in October 2007 and reached a tentative agreement to sell the cell facilities, the two companies continued to haggle about the price. Sony's concession of what is considered a favorable price for Toshiba will likely strike many following Toshiba's drop as HD DVD as more than a coincidence, and perhaps a sign of an informal agreement.

The other interesting aspect of the move is that it indicates a clear shift by Toshiba to back the PS3. The PS3, which last month outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360, previously had few ties to the company; while Microsoft's number one ally in hardware manufacturing has always been Toshiba. Toshiba manufacturers several components for the Xbox 360, including the HD DVD add-on, and the Microsoft Zune MP3 players.

Toshiba's flip-flop may have been in the cards for a while. Microsoft showed little remose as HD DVD took second place to Blu-ray; a move Toshiba must have recognized from its American ally. Now the solidified PS3 venture between Sony and Toshiba indicates that Toshiba now has switched to backing the PS3 almost exclusively, another victory for Sony.

Interesting. If the Cell is used for Toshiba computers, especially laptops, they are SCREWED. Why? My first laptop was a Toshiba, and GOD how I hated that thing. It was their Qosmio models and the model was discontinued before I purchased it. It had HORRIBLE ventilation and overheated in no time. It had horrible performance, and if the Cell is used in them, expect the computers to really malfunction by being overdone in processing power and dying.

The Cell will never be used in laptops, because then it wouldn't be able to run Windows.

I'm not sure i understand how selling the factory to toshiba means that toshiba is backing the ps3 especially since toshiba helped to produce the cell

My parents have a total of four toshiba tvs three of those are over ten years old. two the have the Toshiba home entertainment speakers and stuff. all of the toshiba equipment still works like its brand new. I own two toshiba laptops one is six years old the other one is two years old. while the laptop that the university made my buy hard drive has failed 6 time in the 5 year I owned it I have never had a problem with my oldest toshiba laptop. hence when I went to go to Grad school I got another one. they should be willing to back the PS3 over the Xbox 360 now because of monetary reasons after all they are part of the venture that is making chips for the PS3. this is because they own part of the factory that makes them. Toshiba no should no longer have any interest in backing Microsoft after the poor performance of the HD-DVD add on.

Unlike the rest of the conclusions, this at least has some basis.
