A few good decisions.

1) Sony set a good price target of $400, while MS decided pursuing the Kinect is worth releasing a $500 console.
2) Sony picked GDDR5 instead of DDR3+ESRAM, allowed them to ultimately have flexible memory and more GPU cores on-die and have a clear performance win.  A more powerful console for less money sealed the fate more than anything.
3) Sony focused on quick-play from disc, while MS focused on an the idea of digital game library where you only need the disc once. Not having to swap discs is a nice feature, but the backlash over inability to share & sell your games meant this feature never saw the light of day, so Sony again make the right decision from the start while MS wasted effort on an unpopular idea.

Since a camera didn't fit in the $400 target, Sony didn't bundle a camera with the PS4 even though you can see they developed new camera related and motion control features. This was very fortunate since the Kinect was badly received and blamed for the price difference, so Sony just downplayed their own camera product and profited.

nice analysis. a lot of things seem to be playing in sony's favor, here. do you think its enough to get them to 75% marketshare?

Playstation brand.

Contributing factors:
Price
Final years of PS3 were better than Wii or 360
People realised the stability of 3rd and 1st party games.

Main factors:
Hype
Was the lesser of 3 evils (Nintendo and M$ pretty much shot themselves in the foot while Sony made light of it)
Hype

.. i dont know. that didnt really seem to help them too much last generation lol.

lets be realistic, all three have very strong and powerful brand names. theyre on equal footing in that regard.

It's not the WiiU and it's not the Xbone. Weak competition makes for an easy victory.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Price/performance
3rd party support: hardware and SDK was engineered to be developer friendly, early success only furthers developer incentive to prioritize the PS4 platform
Potential due to 3rd party support and Playstation exclusive developers

Consumer-wise, all they did was use the same model, but at a lower initial price for the hardware ($200 lower) and require a paid subscription for online play (but no paywall for services accessed through PSN), which is tempered by the amount of open access ("free") content your paid subscription is really buying.

But it sure did. Any other console would have died at $599, with a poor game library, and late ports of 360 games that were actually inferior. Not the PS3 though.

Sony is selling the PS4 based on brand power alone. It's a position any other company would like to be. The thing doesn't even have a system seller yet, jesus.

What do you mean didn't help them? They came back from a horrible launch, people didn't get ps3s early on because of the price. This gen will help us prove which has the strongest gaming brand though (hint:playstation) Playstation already proved its brand power with ps3. Now nintendo and MS are struggling with their consoles so its their time to prove their brand power.
