It would need a new source of income, and someone willing to invest the billions of dollars it takes to keep the brand moving. Even if someone was actually make that kind of monetary commitment, and it would take years, they'd have their own agenda that may not be in line with Playstation fans. And that's if the division wasn't auctioned off in parts. Sony flopping would be desasterous for Playstation.

Regarding your "The Playstation brand wouldn't just walk off on it's own and be fine if Sony went under" I don't even remotely think it would be impossible for Sony to spin off (like Bravia) or sell (like Vaio) the PS division.
