Forums - Gaming - Could a Sequel to Sunset Overdrive Appear on PS4? - Podcast Beyond

Probably not, their non-FPS games don't really sell all that great on PS3, I doubt the PS3 userbase would support this game.

Doubt it. Microsoft can easily obtain the ip just like gears of war.

I seriously doubt its that simpel

I am sure it is for microsoft. They have a big check book.

Yeah so you think just because they have a lot of money they throw it around like crazy? Yeah they could give Insomniac 250 mill and the IP would be theirs. But that wouldn´t make any Bussiness sense, this is not how business works. They have to be profitabel with everything they start.

Wrong.

Microsoft wouldn't have payed if Insomniac was going to later bring it on ps. If it becomes a hit then i can see microsoft trying to get the ip. They got gears and that is a huge ip.

In theory it's possible, but don't get your hopes up.

Microsoft probably has right of first refusal for future titles.

I thought they (MS) were hailed as heroes for giving freedom to third party devs and letting them retain their IP's unlike the evil Sony who forced them to work on Sony IP's for over a decade.

IF thats true, then MS wouldnt have any right to refusal for a future sequel.

Personally I dont think there will even be a sequel because the first will flop and no-one will want to fund the second and insomniac wont have the cash to fund it themselves.

Why does it have to be one or the other? And why would controlling the IP mean it can't be an exclusive game? Look at Gears of War.

Controlling your own IP is just as much about the creative freedom that comes with it, which pas dividends not only with any future Sunset games, but also the one they are currently working on. So they could have a multi game deal with MS or even have a right to refusal deal with MS, yet still enjoy the perks of controlling their own IP.

Exactly.

The game isn't even out yet.

Okay. I'll wait then.

But that'll defeat the purpose of Insomniac wanting to own their IP.

No it doesn't. You retain creative control if you own the IP. They can do whatever they want with it, including releasing it on one console. But it will at least be the game they want.

It's a very similar thing to what Respawn went through with Titanfall. They were more than happy to allow MS to have an exclusive deal because it kept them from having to hand the IP over to EA.

The reason they got Gears is so much different. Sunset Overdrive is an active IP which Insomniac wants to build uppon. Gears of Wars was dead for Epic so when Microsoft stepped in to give them money for it and build it on Unreal Engine it was a win win for Epic. Epic has gotten free money and free advertising for their engine, Insomniac is not selling an engine and they sure as hell ain´t gonna sell their IP.

I would imagine if Sunset Overdrive does well, that MS will have the chance to publish the successor but they are not going to sell it.
