I simply can't believe how Nintendo let this happen. From almost 60M devices sold in a year, to less than 20M. Nintendo is clearly the incompetence in a company form.

And people get surprised when some of us says 3DS is not doing good? When we don't agree with the attitude to excuse every mistake.

Some of us wants to see them doing better and healthy, and all of their decisions since Wii U launch has been disastrous.

I agree with this.

Nintendo's problem is two things.

1) Marketing

Nintendo's marketing isn't good enough to convince those who are looking to buy a new system. The PS4 has no games, yet it's selling. Not because people are having fun with the system, but because the PS4 is marketed well.

2) Hardware

The hardware has to compliment the software. It can no longer be the condition for playing Nintendo games. It now has to be one of the reasons to buy a Nintendo game. The systems they make have to endorse the social atmosphere. Miiverse is a step in the right direction, but there needs to be more. There needs to be party chat, cross game chat, easier on-screen notifications, easier messaging system, some sort of universal achievement system and etc. These are just things the competition is doing, but things that make the video game hardware needs to exhibit to become more social. Nintendo fails to understand this, and this is why people aren't interested.

What's remarkable is the clear decline from 2009 onward.... in their prime years, they appear to have made zero preparations for the future.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Nintendo you so silly.

Ouch those numbers are really bad, things need to change and fast.

The decline in the 3DS all stems to the fact that it started out as $250 (same as vita at launch) and then it had that emergency price cut. The $250 was a mistake, but the major price cut is also deeply affecting what is supposed to be its prime years.

Trying to stay on topic, but what's the "topic"?
Sales decline, Nintendo's bad work, or how this may be affecting gaming in general?
I'll just say, Nintendo is the only to blame. Not the Wii U as a system, not the market, not the smartphones, it's all Nintendo's fault.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

3DS is doomed!

The 3DS is still in an enviable position. Some of the casuals who bought the DS are now using phones/tablets - 25 million people purchased Nintendogs, the second best selling game on the DS, we can assume a considerable chunk of those people are casual gamers.

As over 40 million sales, and climbing, can attest there's still a large market for a dedicated handheld gaming device. It's just not as large as it was a mere 6 years ago. It's more of a market share problem than something Nintendo has to change.

Nintendo also makes far more money off of software sales than hardware sales. While the DS was very good to them (top 15 selling games were published by Nintendo!); the 3DS is also doing well software wise (13 of top 15 published by Nintendo).
