Forums - Gaming - Big gaming releases are getting fewer and farther between on new gen...are $15 titles and DLC taking the slack?

Epic said next gen Triple A is 1/3 as many titles, each costing 3X as much. i dont know if that's true, but there sure are a lot of dry spells. Take right now, there was pretty much no triple A all the way from March (Infamous and Titanfall) until May 27, Watch Dogs. Then there is no triple A again all the way Until Madden in late August, if a sports title even counts, and Watch Dogs in early September. That's a LONG time. There's also Wolfenstein on May the 20th, but that's more a mid sized title imo. Oh and TLOU remaster, which is a fairly big title, although it's still not a new game and I doubt the graphics are improved much. That's if it comes out in summer.

But I seem to notice 15-20 dollar titles are getting bigger, better graphics, and taking up the slack maybe. Not so much indies, I usually dont like indies they are too low budget. Some indies might appeal to me, depending, but they're too often horror or puzzle games and dont have the production values I want on a console.

A great example of this is Trials Fusion. It had 100 people working on it, it has really great graphics, a lot of people played it, it's almost like mini-triple A imo. It was $20, $40 with season pass. Even had a disc release.

Another current example is of course Child of Light.

Oh, I also think DLC is becoming another thing that takes the slack. Seems like DLC for current games is becoming a bigger deal, as fewer new games are released.

The gen is just starting, isn't there always a gap in the beginning of a generation.  Also you forgot about Mario Kart 8.  Plenty of mid tier games coming out like Bound by Flame, Kinect Sports already came out, Murdered Souls Suspect (debabtable AAA game), Sniper Elite 3, etc.  Not including last gen games like Tales of Xillia 2 and Drakengard 3.

Jeez. This generation is just getting going. Also saying it costs significantly more to make a game for the PS4/XBox One is non-sense. It will be cheaper due to the unified platforms

Murdered soul soul suspect looks more like a AA game and I highly doubt Tales of Xillia 2 and Drakengard 3 costed 20 million dollars ...

That's why I said mid tier games.

Murdered surely isn't AAA, it woupd have been nice, but I'm afraid that the game could seriously disappoint.

Your first sentence.is correct though. I remember one statement from Dan Vavra (Mafia II, Kingdom Come developer) who said that throughout 2013 they shopped their KC:Deliverance next-gen idea around, but all publishers passed on it because they had little confidence in next-gen console success. He said then that his opinion is that we will see few true next-gen games until late 2015, because publishers are hopping aboard the train just now that they see successful sales of consoles.
