| Havok has announced that the PC version of its physics and animation middleware Havok Complete will be freely downloadable in May 2008. | |
Under the terms of the deal, which has been arranged with Havok owner Intel, approved game developers on the PC platform will be able to execute a commercial distribution license with Havok for free. “Havok has an excellent revenue base generated by sales of our three products across multiple platforms and into multiple industries,” said Havok MD David O’Meara. “This enables us to make an industry-changing move and opens up a much broader market for products such as Havok Behavior – and our new products Havok Cloth and Havok Destruction – that really come alive when adopted on top of our core platform, Havok Complete.” Havok added that its overall focus remains cross-platform and that its tools will continue to be commercially licensed for other platforms and in other industries such as movies. The free offer is only applicable to PC games. Havok also unveiled two new software products at the Game Developers Conference, Havok Cloth and Havok Destruction, which have been designed to provide artists with increased control over interactive cloth and destructible objects within games. Havok’s physics software has aided the development of over 200 titles, including Halo 3, Assassin’s Creed, BioShock and Heavenly Sword, as well as upcoming games such as Alan Wake, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and StarCraft II. |

The company said it aims to propel innovative game development by making the technology, which includes Havok Physics and Havok Animation, freely available to the large number of independent developers, academic institutions and enthusiasts in the PC space.
