Forums - Sales Discussion - I blame VGChartz: the fake accuracy accusation

VGChartz numbers are estimates calculated on a sample base. In the end, numbers are shown which are estimates. Sadly, some people dont understand that. And part has to do with what I want to call fake accuracy.

Example:

Sales game X for week: 17,524

                Sales game X LTD: 134,236

Message: I even tracked the copy you picked up at the mom and pop store around the corner.

What many people do to show it is an estimate, is to round the numbers. Round them to maybe 50s or 100s.

Example:

Sales game X for week: 17,500

                 Sales game X LTD: 134,250

Message: this is an estimate.

Always keep the "exact" number in the database and calculate sums based on that, as not distort sales over time. But please, do us all a favour and get rid of the fake accuracy. This will help explain to people what this site is about.

I think ioi gets numbers from a couple of sources and adds them up, i do not mind the numbers as they are and think rounded numbers just look to "fake". The site it seems gets most numbers correct( often overtracks 360 and undertracks PS3 but the Wii numbers seem solid).

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

ioi already went over this a long time ago. I'm pretty sure he is not going to change it.

I also really don't care which method is used.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Nothing is going to be exact to the copy, even the NPD is an estimate based on extrapolating data from a set of sources. When the math is done, it just comes out to an exact figure, even if that figure is an estimate. Ignorance is to blame, not the numbers. Even if it was rounded off just to give the appearance of estimation, people would still call foul.

Vgchartz are very inaccurate I have no idea where they are pulling these numbers out off. Wii for example sells 200 000 units in US one week, next week only 48000 units. I think the estimates are made up lol.

Point in case, ignorance is to blame, not ioi.

Unless dark lord's was a joke post, but still accentuates the point.

Wow... someone let me ban him!! someone let me ban him!!!

If ioi made up those numbers then don't you think he probably wouldn't of reported crazy ass numbers?

I'm guessing you also picture ioi in a room randomly picking software numbers out of thin air for the 200 games that are posted every week in all three regions.

The rounding of the figures is not required to exemplify the status of the figures as an estimation.

Rounding is a method of simplifying information to ensure easier digestion of said information. It also works as a shortcut for those computing them. I find the fact that Ioi doesn't partake in the shortcuts as a means of care in ensuring figures are as detailed as they can be.

Besides, why approximate something that is already an estimate?
