I thought only blu ray could make 1080p

Hmmm? bluray is storage space

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

Wasn't the PS3 going to run two monitors, full 1080p - at 100fps locked? What happened to that?

Note that this *was* originally promised by Kaz, when the PS3 was first announced. And now it doesn't even have true 1080p games - and even fewer that run 1080p at 60fps (locked).

Developing new SPU enable game engines takes some time. MGS4, FF XIII and GT5 should all be 1080p.

Some new GT5 screenshots (720p):

IMO Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction is awesome in 720p, but Insomniac made major advancements (PS2 engine => PS3 game engine with 10-20 SPU usage of 5 SPUs for Resistance 1, now nearly the whole game engine is running on 6 SPUs for Resistance 2).

Hmm...   What does this have to do with the op?

Looks like you're just taking cheap shots at Sony... though I wouldn't but that beyond you.

1080p isn't really a dealbreaker, or some holy grail of picture quality. Sony made a big deal about it in the beginning because 1080p was supposed to be something that the 360 couldn't do. Really, the differences between 720p and 1080 are invisible to the average consumer.

Video games are a visual and interactive medium. Graphics ARE important. The VIDEO portion is important, but not as important as the GAME portion. Hopefully we gamers are intelligent enough NOT to place to much emphasis on something as negligible as screen resoloution. That's what companies want us to do. The name on the front of the box is why you buy the game. Resolution doesn't make a great game better.

Although mikeB seems to believe those promies are true, despite the fact that 1080p will just eat VRAM that can be used for textures.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Agreed, according to Microsoft's head of 360 development a well performing game wouldn't be possible at 1080p, that's a lot more ammunition for any rival fanboy criticism.

Sony promoted the PS3 as a platform which supports high definition games "up to 1080". And that's entirely accurate.

Time to Work !

Another reason why Sony pushed 1080p was because the PS3 plays Blu ray movies which are of course in native 1080p

1080p allows for more details, this becomes relevant with larger HDTV sets (note upscaling does not add details).

Relative pixel size difference with same resolution on a larger TV:

With regard to optimal viewing distance:

Screen and content resolution on HDTVs due to larger sizes are far more relevant than with regard to running PC games at high resolutions on small monitors (the average monitor in use I believe is ~17 inch).
