I'm considering grabbing a Vita, but I really only like RPGs on handhelds. Are there enough quality RPGs on the system to justify a purchase, and how does Vita's RPG lineup compare to 3DS?

Good question. I have my fair share of rpgs (and srpgs) on both and they're great on portable consoles! Plus there are some good PSP RPGs you can play on Vita and all DS RPGs work on 3DS. I'm looking forward to the debate. Might prompt me to get a game I don't already own.

Factoring in the large amount of PSP and PS1 RPGs available, I would go with the Vita. Although try to find one with the OLED screen if you can.

Can't go wrong with either though.

honestly, I don't think either has that strong of an RPG line up yet. If I had to say one over the other though I would probably say vita.

also, if you do end up getting a 3ds, do NOT get Bravely Default!!! Combat is good traditional RPG's fare, but the story is beyond terrible and they way they organize the game... just save yourself and don't get it!

3DS so far.

I like 3ds's lineup but its all about preference really

3DS definitely has more jrpg's than Vita and many would say most are better than what's offered on Vita (like Bravely Default, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, and SMT IV). BUT Vita has Persona 4 Golden which rips every jrpg 3DS has to shreds. Oh, Y's Memories of Celceta is awesome and while DanganRonpa isn't an rpg it's still awesome as well.

I honestly do not like many of the VITA jrpgs, a little too niche for my taste, but people here love them. If you're only factoring 3DS games vs. vita games I'd go 3DS. If you include PS1 titles... Vita.

I have been looking at that one.  is it good?  Also, (so I can tell whether or not I can trust your assessment) what did you think of bravely default?

Persona 4 Golden and Final Fantasy X HD are great on Vita. Theres a bunch of great rpgs on Vita just haven't got around to them.
