Don't get me wrong I'll be the first to buy into VR once it launches commercially... But I don't expect it to be adopted by anybody else around me outside of a few geek friends maybe... Heck even around here a lot of people a reticent to the idea, that alone says a lot about the current state of the tech

Unfortunately that's also a pretty accurate description for most frequent users on this site. If people like us actually had a life, we wouldn't hang out on video game websites, identify with brands and seriously discuss if Microsoft or Sony is better.
So yes, there is a point to what you're saying, but the sad truth is that this just proves that we are the perfect target audience, that gamers will be the early adopters who make VR popular.
I worry to. They just posted the largest profit in their history and bill gates is back at number 1 richest man in the world again. Clearly microsoft are at their lowest business point ever. God help them.

1. You don't know the cost of VR so how can it be the biggest barrier?
2. There are hardly anymore local coop games so having to headsets would be potinless for most.
3. Content is one of the main things being argued against on the PS4 and it's selling really well. Sony isn't dumb they'll have a studio work on a game to release with the headset. If it's good enough people will buy it and be willing to wait for more.
I'm not saying VR will or wont fail but you make way to many assumptions and you haven't even used the product to know how good it is or isn't. I'm not sure what will happen to VR and honestly no one does even you it's just a guess.

He's pretty obviously talking about the direction they're taking with regards to making the PC a more closed platform, not in terms of profit.

You clearly did not even read what he said or didn;t understand it. It had zero to do with profit.
I read it perfectly. Hes saying that for the last 3 years microsoft have been promoting a closed platform. And that microsoft should look out. And my point is while hes saying this, its been the best business time in profit these 3 years. Making these kind of comments completely out of place.
Why would you go back to the old way when you make more profit the new way?
Totally misplaced comments due to MS's massive profitability on Windows 8 and how they can easily make a better OS with Windows 9 or whatever.
Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.
