Forums - Sony Discussion - Microsoft welcome to enter the BDA any time, article inside.

Jeez, that survey makes it sound like you get free movies.

Around the Network

This was obvious from the start. That's why when everyone was saying that Sony were handing out the massive payouts they were full of crap because Sony were not the ones handing out the massive payouts to studios to join BD.

I found this article that says an "insider" at Microsoft confessed that 360 will have BR by May.

I don't know if it's true but Microsoft is up to something - there's definitely a shortage of 360 - maybe getting ready to bring out their next SKU.

From the article: In all fairness, La Vole’s, “we’re committed to the HD-DVD camp” argument didn’t fly (or is this 20/20 hindsight?) – the fact that Xbox 360 didn’t ship with a HD-DVD unit was a dead giveaway.

If Xbox 360 consoles became compatible with Blu-Ray, Playstation 3 consoles could lose their current advantage.

Why would Microsoft consider Blu-Ray for the Xbox 360 when it's very obvious they've been working on digital downloads all this time? Also if Microsoft and Netflix actually do make a deal and over 7,000 movies and tv series are available for download it would make any Blu-Ray even more unlikely for the system.

Take this survey from Netflix for example, they must have been approached by Microsoft if they asked such a question:

Netflix did the exact same survey asking PSN users if they would want to use the service. Somehow, I don't think Sony are about to drop Blu-Ray support though.

Digital downloads are no substitute for optical media and the ridiculous contention that they are has just got to stop. MS may or may not eventually release a BD drive for the 360, but there is no real tactical advantage in doing so, as Sony will always have the upper hand in this respect.

Toshiba, on the other hand, will definitely go Blu eventually, but probably not until BD encroaches significantly on the DVD market.

If the 360 became compatible with Blu-Ray, Sony would gain several advantages: The PS3 would be cheaper than 360+BD,  the PS3 would still have superior BD functionality (for starters, the 360 would never be able to use BD for games), and Sony would profit from every 360 BD unit sold, as well as a cut from disc sales to 360 users. There is no possible way it could have a negative impact on Sony or the PS3.
