Obviously I haven't experienced 1080p games on console yet. But I am very happy with the look of 720p games on PS3 on my 48" TV.

Personally, I think if TF could have gotten rock solid 60fps with 720p and 2xMSAA that would have been a great experience.

However everyone would focus on the 720p and no doubt X360 version will play at 720p. So Respawn obvioulsy felt they needed to have a resolution above the 360 version or suffer from all sorts of totally unwarranted criticism.

Serious question: do those extra 72 lines make any real difference to the player? Esp. compared to how much of a difference frame rate drops make to the player.

If TF could have shipped at fixed 60fps at 720p then it should have, with optimisation patches progressively raising resolution but always keeping 60fps locked.

The Digital Foundary analysis will be interesting. If the framerate drops are infrequent and relatively small (never going below 45?) then perhaps the sacrifice for 72 more lines is reasonable.

"Unwarranted"? What in God's name was the point of upgrading from their 360s if the resolution and framerate do not increase?

I was sure that it would be the final resolution.

See? Before 8th gen even started, I already said filter AA is the future for gaming.

Better graphics hopefully (textures, fine detail etc) and better AA. Possibly also, while Xb one @720p could have locked 60fps X360 might only be able to do variable 60fps. By most accounts its an engine more optimised for 360 than Xb one, so I wouldn't expect vastly better performance out of the Xb one on a lastgen engine. And in any case what would people prefer 792p with 60fps variable? or 720p with 60fps locked? Some people say there's no (or little) perceptable difference between 720p and 1080p, so there is no advantage to the gamer of 792p vs 720p and it's only for the developer to be able to claim a point of difference. Whereas there is most certainly an advantage to the gamer of being 60fps locked vs 60fps variable. IN any case Respawn seem to be confident of upping resolution with patches, so why not leap from 720p @60fps locked straight up to 900p @60fps locked once that patch is ready.

IF it was a trade off between resolution and locked frame rate then I think Respawn made the wrong decision.

More news... seems like they won't increase the resolution after all... just improve the performance.

I fail to see how any of this will affect the content of the game, I'd be happy with it in 720p and at a steady frame rate as long as I can bloody play it.

I'm not even sure it can keep steady 60fps at 720p... considering how much the frame rate drops in certain situations...
