Forums - Gaming - The industry wanted Wii to fail

Posted something like this on another thread but wanted peoples veiws.

The thing is, from the start of this generation( being when the consoles were being preveiwed for the first time) it seemed the industry was totally against nintendo's strategy. The industry wanted Nintendo to fail, but its not the industry who chooses who comes on top its the consumer.

Here are a few links.

6) Van Baker says casual gamers won’t be engaged with the Wii longer than a couple of years. Low resolutions will destroy the Wii future as well. http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5786&Itemid=52

9) Even at the end of 2005, everyone still thought Nintendo would lose. Iwata says within 2006 and 2007, it will be clear who made the right choices.http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/mar2005/tc20050314_2243_tc121.htm

And i have a whole lot more. These industry analysts proclaiming nintendo would fail out of the gate every other week. and its still happens now. Now tell me. Really be truthfull in your answer. If you were a 3rd party dev/pub and these "top"analysts you pay are saying all this FUD, would you make a game for the Wii? Now tell me how you would react 6months to a year later after the Launch of the Wii and seeing its success? the fact that you haven't even built assets or graphic engines or library's or even learnt the tech of the wiimote, how are you supposed to make anything other than shovel ware in less than a year?

Yeah, nobody really wanted the Wii to fail (well, anyone that matters), they just didn't expect it to be the breakthrough hit that it was.

As for your question, meh, it's a boring question. Of course games made with a small budget made in a short amount of time aren't going to be of the highest quality.

And as for adapting engines to the Wii and utilizing the remote, it's not as hard as you think.

Analysts certainly wanted the Wii to fail. The industry as a whole I don't think cared much one way or the other. Certain studios wanted the Wii to fail I am certain, but that is just their style I guess. I am certain that there are a few studios that wanted any given console to fail.

The reason I think it is easy to say analysts wanted it to fail is because analysts probably like their job. When your job is to predict the future you like to have a very long and extensive established history to pull from. Industries normally evolve very slowly and the market changes at a stable and observable rate. The Wii represents a huge jump in (apparently) the right direction. This makes it a very hard to predict product. There is obviously consumer demand for it, but how high is the demand going to get and how long will it be there? The Wii is being made and sold at a record setting pace and is still experiencing waide spread shortages in major markets. That is unheard of for just about any product, let alone for a game console. This causes horrible inaccuracies in predictions because there is no real historical precedant to follow. That would cause me to worry about my future as an analyst if I were an analyst

I'll echo the sentiments of thought vs. desire.

But I'd also like to add that because most dev's put their most money into PS3/360 game development, they wanted those two systems to succeed above all else.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

@ Twestern

It seems pretty hard for a lot of these devs, spewing out PS2 level graphics, and being a bit of a graphic programmer i think it is as hard as i think but i digress, A lot of folkes aks why the Wii is so succesfull yet does not a lot of big blockbuster games like say devil may cre etc... And i don't know about you but ever since the Wii has come to the market it has had a lot of resistance from a lot of people in the gaming industry. Maybe you haven't noticed, i dont know

Ya, we've seen some really awesome uses of the Wii controls already, The Godfather, No More Heroes, Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports all come to mind. They've shown us that the Wii controls work really really well, especially in FPS's like Metroid Prime 3.

As for people expecting and wanting the Wii to fail. Yes you are right but you completely missed the mark. Large game studios/investment firms don't like the Wii being cheap to make games for and they especially don't like Wiiware being even cheaper for independents to jump on in. They see the little guy as a huge threat to their market and most importantly their bottom line. They want all the money to themselves. The HD consoles practically guarantee the big guy the entire market. The Wii threatens their market.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.
