Forums - General - Huge TV's getting kinda cheap...

At least here in the USA. I have a few years old Philips 42", lately and with next gen got a hankering for something bigger... I also sit 10+ feet away from my TV, and 42" is on the small side for that distance.

There was a deal for a Vizio (generally considered a good cheap brand, though not up with Samsung) 60 inch at Target for 799...then they were offering various discounts (10% off all TV's with their cartwheel app, 5% redcard discount, etc) such that I could get 25% off. the total price incvluding tax for the TV would have been $650! (before tax $600). Kinda amazing! Also this TV is tested at displaylag.com as having very low latency, so it'd be great for gaming! That deal has since passed though. I considered it.

I could craiglist my current Tv for maybe $250, coulda had a quality 60" for $400 net! Amazing!

But I was at Wal Mart tonight and they had Vizio 60" for 798. Vizio 70" for $1498! Even a 70" is kinda affordable.

BTW screen sizes dont scale linearly. A 60" TV is over double the screen area of my 42". I use this site to check it out http://www.nicetaco.com/tv.aspx

For example, square inches of viewing area:

42"=753

50"=1068

55"=1292

60"=1537

70"=2093

A 70" is almost THREE TIMES my 42" screen area...

Around the Network

ya it isn't uncommon to see a Samsung 60 inch LED TV for $1200.

Think manufacturing hit the sweet spot and 4k TV's are beginning to take the spotlight in the next 5 years.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

yeah, agreed. i upgraded my gaming TV from 40" to 46" when the living room tv died. was only about $600 cause i went for the model without all that smartTV crap i'll never use since i have a game console hooked up.

i doubt i'll ever go bigger than 46" though, i just don't have the wall space for it.

i've been saying for a while now that sony and the rest need to make a mindset transition. tvs are no longer the premium product they once were. all the money spend on making bigger and bigger tvs is wasted as there will never be a big audience for 100" tvs. 4k is probably a waste too as maybe only a 1/4 of the market will be in the +50" size range for which 4k becomes meaningful.
