Sen. John McCain pledged Sunday on national television not to raise taxes under any circumstances if he is elected president.

"So on taxes, are you a 'read my lips' candidate, no new taxes, no matter what," host George Stephanopoulos asked the Arizona Republican on ABC's "This Week."

"No new taxes," McCain affirmed, before making an argument that taxes ought to be cut if the economy deteriorates.

"But under circumstances would you increase taxes?" Stephanopoulos asked in a follow-up question.

"No," said McCain.

A very unrealistic pledge, as most economists are saying that there will be a need to raise taxes and cut spending to get the debt under control

Poor John. On the one hand, he knew the Bush Tax cuts were a frickin' joke and voted against them. On the other hand, he'd be flayed alive if he said he'd raise taxes if he had to. It's some unfortunate pandering on his part.

Oh well. At least he still holds strong when he talks about immigration and climate change.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Depends on what he means by no new taxes. Does he mean all tax types or the big ones, capital gains, income, property.

I'd say first they need to get the dollar under control before they even consider making major changes to the economy. It's fluctuating far too much and it's not reliable to base your economy changes on a fluttering dollar.

I'd personally start cutting spending. Military is a great one to start with.

is there one that wants--was raise taxes and up the retirement age--which is what we need to do
