People saying the HDMI cable in the package of the PS4 is bad. Is that true? Will a better HDMi improve the picture quality?

It's not bad but in the beginning they were faulty...
A more expensive HDMI cable will never increase picture quality ;)

Better HDMI cables don't improve picture quality. What you get is better durability and a better connection to the device so it won't get loose all time. I usually use Monster HDMI cables for all devices, price is decent and can't complain about quality.

Right, because it is DIGITAL, a crappy one might have bandwidth/handshaking problems though, but probably the only real problem will be how much earlier will break if you disconnect and move it frequently. Gold plated is useless IMO. It's not component (YPbPr) (analog HD cable).

Persona 5 on PS3, I won't need next gen!

Well, price it's decent, not pretty good. It was 50-70% more expensive than my cheaper cable, but I liked the build quality.

Exactly that. If he wants 4K or 3D, I wouldn't recommend a crappy one because of these issues. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend a crappy one not even if he wanted 720p. HDMI inputs are usually sensitive and break easily. I've seen more than once a cheap cable turn a US$10-20 saving in a broken HDMI port in a TV or console.

Yeah, I have two, but I honestly think the Rocketfish that connects to my PC is exactly the same as my two SUPER OMEGA 10,000 Monster cables (or whatever they're called) in terms of build quality. I think the extra cost comes from how cool they look.

Wow didn't know about broken ports! How much connecting and disconnecting was needed for that!?
I always use 10€ cables, I suppose they will work fine with the PS4 (no 4K).

Well, it is digital but that doesn't mean that the picture is stored in one bit. Of course you can have problems on the way from device to TV but usually people don't have big coils in their living room to interfer with the signals in the hdmi cable ;)
