Forums - Gaming - Rewind things just 1 year (and 4 days)...

Feburary 10th, 2013.

wiiU had just come off a pretty good holiday.  The january NPD hadn't released yet so we weren't sure about the january sales drop.  big games like rayman, pikmin, wiifit U, wonderful 101,  and various others weren't yet delayed.  Aliens colonial mariens wasn't known to suck yet.

the ps4 reveal event was about 10 days away.  sony had just sold off a building in order to keep their finances afloat.

xbox had come off another successful holiday.  the media, in general, loved the xbox brand.  chatter about the next gen was getting louder and everyone though xbox was destined to dominate the industry.

could this last 12 months (and 4 days) have turned out any more exactly opposite from expectations?   holy crap.

Well, yes, 1 year can make one hell of a difference.

I like the transition between a generation and the other, it´s so unpredictable, usually a system´s success doesn´t transfer to its successor, as there are many variables that come into play (PS1 - PS2 a rare example)

yeah, crazy stuff.  this is my first gen change (other than 3DS/Vita) as i joined the site specifically to see how the wii was doing.

..i mean, i've been gaming since 1984-ish but i didn't pay attention to numbers before that.

I´ve also been gaming since the 80s (late 80s), but there was no internet back then, and as a little kid I didn´t think about the business/sales side of gaming.

I don´t even know if there was some group like NPD tracking sales of the NES/SNES/Genesis/etc.. and releasing that information to the public.

In the 16 bit gen, for example, I had no idea the Genesis was whooping the SNES ass here in the U.S. until DKC came out (apparently, that´s the story, the Genesis was giving the SNES a run for its money and DKC was the game that changed that scenario)

I think the Vita was already eating dust back then. So not a complete reversal. But just wait a year from now!!!
