With the increasing competition from mobile devices do you think there will always be consoles? We already know there will be a 9th gen,Do you think we will see a 10th and 11th gen etc,or is all this doom unbased?

The only Company I can see doing that is Nintendo cause they are soo stubborn (for better or for worse)... Yahtzee said it best "WiiU is the only gaming console to remain a gaming console this gen vs sub-par gaming pc, multimedia platform and streaming device humancentipied together" (Not word for word but it was funny the way he said it)

The 3DS too vs Vita,I think there will always be for what you said Nintendo will always make consoles and handhelds without any entertainment features put into it like bluray etc,but I see sony too each gen though they are closer too a multimedia device every gen,well they are now except Nintendo.Maybe thats a plus

Funny thing is that actually Nintendo started with the entertainment stuff. At least with its name

But I guess the meaning sort of changed you know like today Mario or Angry Birds is casual but the same kind of game was hardcore back in the day.
And like today corridor shooters are called hardcore even tho they offer no challenge whatsoever. The challenge comes from other people but I certainly dont need an online community for something like that. I can always find another person that is better than me in Tetris, Wii Sports, UNO, farting whatever.

And as long as Nintendo does not try to hard to mimic the "modern" industry there will always be a dedicated gaming system. It might sell 10m units at best but thats not bad at all. I mean how many games sell 10m units? And they cost a fifth or even less than a gaming system.

Makes me wonder how comapnies that sell 1m units of a 60 dollar game finds the time to bash a company that sells 5m of a 300 dollar device.... There is obviously more people that like that expensive device than people that like the "cheap" games. So they actually should stfu lol

The final step off the platform for the console system is gonna be when it merges with the TV. Same with the Blu-Ray Player and DVD Player, and the cable box, and the DVR. They've been capable of doing it for years now but they don't because they can make more money selling them all seperately. After that, the computer will merge with the TV and it will all be controlled from your couch. Whether you wanna use a controller or a keyboard and mouse will be up to you, but individual console manufacturers will be history.

Think of it like Steam and napster/iTunes. They murdered software retailers like GAME, EB Games, Future Shop, BestBuy, HMV, when they started selling their stuff over the internet. It was something they had been capable of doing for ages but no one wanted to do it because they make more money off of it this way. Their millions of dollars of retail stores became obsolete overnight because of them. Steam however is doing fine, but they are putting A LOT of people out of business. Whoever does do it will make a fortune though.

A market for something will always exist as long as there is demand for it. So will game consoles die? That's up to us.

My answer as a pragmatic objective obeserver of the industry: Yes, so long as there are dedicated gamers who like relaxing in their living room/room and playing games on their TV, there will always be a place for dedicated game consoles to accommodate them.

My answer as a gamer and fan: I sure as fuck hope so, because as much as I like some PC games, I far prefer playing console games, even to portables. I just can't get into portables much. I will always prefer playing my games on a big TV screen.
