Halo 2 DID have the best MP, hand's down. But don't get your hopes up. Unless it uses Bungies original engine, without tweaks, original maps and original playlists, it's not going to play like it use to.
I don't have proof, but I'd wager anything MS will have 343 fuck with the engine. Today's COD fans couldn't handle Halo 2's MP.
